Sooo... has anyone considered quitting their job and playing poker full time? I don't think I ever would (especially because I suck pretty bad ), but that would be one heck of a career. |

Every minute of every day! But I know once that fantasy became a reality, it wouldn't be very glamorous. Especially since I'm accustomed to a certain lifestyle and that would definitely be at risk trying to grind it out as a professional poker player. Without a consistent income, my mortgages, etc. would just stress me out.
(not to mention I'm not good enough and would just lose everything I owned!!!) |

I don't think I'd make enough to cover the amount of chairs that I would need to keep buying when I go on tilt! |

LOL!!!
And that's probably not the table image you want when entering those big stake tourneys!
You could replace Phil Hellmuth as the John McEnroe of poker though... |

Maybe when I retire, I'll split my time between the tables and the golf course.
Of course, that's still a good 40 years down the line.... |

I have. It's not easy. In 2000 I quit my job and did lots of gambling. I managed to make a living for about 2 years, but then a job offer came along that I couldn't refuse.
In my 2 year gambling career, I never played Holdem. I only played BlackJack, craps, and the gimmick(Caribbean stud, 3 card, and let it ride) poker games at the casino. I did well, but the stress was hard to handle. I was down to my last $100 at one point. At other times I was up nearly $100,000. The swings are brutal.
Right Not I took the summer off to see how I do. Ultimately I would like to make a career out of it, but I don't know if it is in the cards. We shall see. |

I dealt 3 card and let it ride, those are house games. that would be a tough game to earn a living at. |

Tell me about it. I hit 2 straight flushes playing Caribbean stud. I got $21,000 for one and $14,000 for the other. That helped me along.
I also one $8000 playing 3 card at the palms last march. |

No I've only been playing holdem for about a year. I play online just about every day now. I just, in the past month, started playing everyday. I used to only play a couple times a month. |

| Awesome now someone on this board is actually close to me. Not that it really matters but most of you guys are so far away. You ever go to Harrahs in east chicago. I went there last weekend and hit 180 on a quarter slot. I wasnt even planning on playing shit like that but the poker games were limit 10/20 and I didnt have the bankroll with me at the time to play that kind of action. Well I cashed out at 167.50 in the positive. The only time I have only been at a casino by the way since I just turned 21 a few months ago. |

Not to be a wet blanket, but how exactly did you figure you could make a living gambling on games that have an inherent disadvantage? Other than blackjack, I doubt there are ANY professional gamblers who make a living playing craps, carribean stud, or other games that you mentioned(unless they're somehow cheating).
There are only a select few games where the player can have an advantage over the house, or can win by some added knowledge or skill. The ones that come to mind are below, I'm sure there are a few others:
Poker
Blackjack
Sports betting
I doubt there too many making a decent living even at those, but trying to earn money on craps or caribbean stud is just asking for trouble. Glad you managed to do OK, but surely you've read what the odds are against the player for each of those games? I would honestly be interested in your reasoning about how you could win long-term. |
