A game at which I was an irregular member was busted on Thursday evening. They had 2 full tables 3 times a week, playing different limits of Hold'em. The guy that ran it is a pro, and the game had a few other semi-pros in it. As far as I know they were making a killing (!0% up to $4 rake per hand).
Story has it they had a full SWAT team storm the house during the biggest game (PL) of the week. They questioned all the players, confiscated their cash, and sent them on their way. A friend of mine had more than $600 confiscated. Don't know whether the guy who ran the game was arrested; I can only assume he was.
Rumors are that a regular member was busted for something and rolled on them, but that's only a rumor.
I don't think anything will come of this for me, although I may get questioned at some point since my name appears on their email list. It just kinda sucks, you know. The place was decent; the basement of a guy's townhouse. There weren't any unsavory characters (well, unless you count the obvious degenerate gamblers that we all are) that frequented the game, not on the nights I went, anyway. I didn't get the sense that anything ELSE was going on (i.e. drugs). And the person that ran it is a really nice guy.
Just sucks. |

| I think it would be illegal because the host was taking a rake. At least, that's how it is here in Michigan, fine if no rake, but once you start that, watch out. |

Exactly. I think there's something about 3 or more players deriving significant income from the game, too.
I think legal card rooms might be coming to WV though, so it may be pointless to play in an illegal game when I can go 20 miles and play legally. |

Not to mention that the IRS will probably be interested in finding out just how much money he has made and not claimed as income. |

I asked the guy once about that and he basically gave me a "mind your own business" sort of comment. Didn't press the issue, so I have no idea. |

yeah--- I was there that night! Talk about your bad beats. try losing all the money on the table, in your pocket and the future possible money from this game. Now im forced to drive to atlantic city every weekend and play up there. If anyone knows any good Northern Virginia games, I'd love to hear about them.

| i know the law in the state where i live says that each town was authority over gambling laws, but most are the same thing. the house cannot take a cut or make odds for it to be legal. if these guys were making such a killing, they should have paid off the cops to prevent such a thing. lol |

| Chef, let's hear some details! What was the raid like? How many people were there? Did they make arrests? Did they storm in with guns drawn? Did they break down doors? Were you questioned? |

2 full tables of 10-11 guys plus dealers
no arrests just citations for participating in an illegal gambling operation
its a class 3 misdemeanor...up to $500 fine, ill find out in december.
the cops came in in full swat gear with guns drawn......"POLICE...SEARCH WARRANT.....HANDS ON YOUR HEAD"
everyone was detained for about 2.5 hours. I was questioned regarding any book making, drug dealing, other home games... didn't really have anything to give him, not that I would have anyway.
I truely feel that they were expecting it to be much more than it was. A bunch of dudes playing cards is not the immediate threat to society as we know it. Probably the most relaxed search warrant these guys had served. |

They have been raiding home games in NE ohio pretty hard hte last few months.
Ever since the busted one of the "Charity" casions for skimming on the rake. They say the guy has scrapped millions from these things.
The only home games they bust are ones taking a rake. If your just playing wiht 5/10 of your friends then don't worry about it. If you are charging a rake then you can be busted for running a gaming house.
I used to deal at one of these, and a friend of mine deals at these things he's been arrested. The last one that he was busted at, the games hadn't started yet. Something happend and most the people didn't show so everyone was sitting around watching TV when the cops showed up. "What Poker game officers?"

| As luck would have it one of the places I play/ deal cards at, a local pool hall had two cops walk into it and ask what they were doing... since there was no money on the table and the cops had no search warrant or probably cause they let it go... I wasn't there so I don't know exactly what went down but, we have cops drive though the lot like once or twice a night... still haven’t gotten busted for anything yet... I'm surprised that it hasn't to be completely honest, there are like 2 card rooms in the same area anyways that I don't think have ever been raided... Got to love corrupt cops in southern Ohio, you stay on there good side your fine you cross the line they will find ways to get you on some sort of bull shit charge... |
