if so, how do you adjust? what are patterns/tells you look for to figure out, on which level villian thinks?

-it means the world. you have to know how your opponents think. it might be OK at a particular level where everyone is terrible to assume they are all equally retarded thinkers, but you still need to know.
-have you read theory of poker? theres a section on there that describes how to play in each type of game (loose passive, loose aggressive etc). that might help.
i get reads on people by looking at every hand that goes to showdown. when im 12 tabling i might not be able to check everyone, but every big that is semi-big i look at the hands. then i see how it was played and from this i start to get an idea how they play. doing this for 450k hands makes you a good hand reader.
-if they are unknown i usually assume they are bad. |

-What do you expect a very good players winrate be at these levels:
.5/1
1/2
2/4
3/6
5/10
List these players in order, best to worst, in cash game play:
- Daniel Negreanu
- Mike Matusow
- Todd Brunson
- Phil Ivey

- Jenifer Harman

How much are you up/down in the 25/50 games you play?
How big of a jump is it from 10/20? |

-by cash games, do you mean NL holdem? from what i've seen matusow, harman and to a lesser extend farha seem like weak spots.
for overcall cash games its probably something like ivey, harman, negreanu, brunson, laak/farha, matusow |

im up about 120k in the 25/50 games. its not that big of a jump, just need the BR. 5/10 > 10/20 is tougher because theres soo many more pure fish at 5/10, but 10/20 and 25/50 probably have close to the same amount |

This thread's getting me excited about online poker again. I actually jumped to my bookshelf to grab ToP.
I always considered myself a better SH than FR player, but in my latest online stint, I've been break-even SH and a slight winner at FR. I noticed my VP$iP is a bit higher SH than yours. Could it be a major leak that I'm playing anything on the button first in and calling raises with straight gap-concept in position? |

the biggest winners tend to be those who don't play for the money, but play for the game.
when did you realize that money was just a by-product of a fierce game? |

you might just be results oriented.
i dont play 'anything' on the button but i do like to play alot of hands because its easy to pick up lots of unwanted pots |

Could you explain just about everything you do? For example, if someone was sitting next to you while you were playing could you answer if they were asking "why did you do that?" to everything? I find one of my biggest problems is I do something and someone asks why and I say "man I really don't know." I imagine it gets better over time but is everything pretty much automatic?

people see higher stakes game and everyone reraising light and try to emulate it. they don't know what they are doing or why they're doing it and ended up spewing too much.
also included is people never folding to 3bets and then not know what to do postflop |

WOW, i just read every entry in this post and i must say - "They're Great"
My question is this: "Poker Instinct" - i am starting to believe imho, this is the very key to making the best poker player you can be. There have been many times where i just get that feeling/instinct i know villain is pulling a move or i can clearly see they are weak, but end up folding to their aggressive bets, with the vast majority of showdowns seen i was correct to go with that instinct! I am starting to get myself to go with this instinct even if it means i could be making a play myself solely on pure ballz with my read/instinct!
The real question is when i get into these situations where my instincts "kick in" is it better to make a hefty re-raise or just push? what would be more beneficial/powerful (+EV) for me to do and why?
And if you choose to answer Thank you! |

very nice thread, i think people took my other post in this thread way too seriously.
I was actually talking to gabe at the time and (I believe?) we had just got done slumming it at 1/2 hu over like 6 tables. He was berating me for calling his shove with mid pair when he b3b allin a bare flush draw (he had 12 twice and flush hit on river), so I figured I'd shoot back some love. I think I had a few drinks in me too, holla
gabe,
who do you think are the top 5 players at 5/10 on stars, and what makes them difficult to play against? Top player(s) at any stakes? |

theres a ton of factors this depends on. in general, if you are doing it against someone you play with alot you want to do whatever you do with a strong hand in the same situation so you are tougher to read.
but i like i said, there are many factors that go in to this |

i guess your question implies the top players the ones difficult to play with??
i dont think any of them are difficult to play against. cts and purpleuros are good but they dont play as much as most. |

ok let me rephrase that, say you sit down at a table, what is the Absolute worst 6-max table you could fathom playing in at 5/10? ignore players like cts who usually play much higher.
do you think you would have an edge in this game? |
