Hi all,
A couple of hands from today's session that I am not whether I made the right decision. Comments and advice appreciated as always.
Hand 1:
Should I have raised the flop? Obviously seeing what he had I should of, as he would definately played back at me.
I didn't think he had an ace and so thought I would scare him off and not get value.
What do you think? Slowplay a bad idea?

Hero has 2s 4d (flush, jack high).
Villain has 5c 5d (three of a kind, fives).
Outcome: Hero wins $4.10.
Hand 2:
Was I wrong to make a move here. The guy was S-LA and was aggressive on the flop, c-betting about 2/3 of the time. I thought the flop was quite safe and so wanted to raise him off the hand. In retrospect maybe I should have raised more. On the Turn I took his Check as he was scared of the Ace and thought a 50% pot bet would take him off the hand.
Bad move? should I stay away from these kind of moves at 25NL or was the play ok?

I'm new but have been reading a lot. Here's my take:
Hand 1
I think you should have bet out on the flop the spades scared me. I would have bet 3/4 of the pot on the flop. I would have bet again on the turn and checked the river.
Hand 2
I think the Villan had AQ, as Renton says, "a bet on the turn usually means they have the goods." |

I think your right about hand 1 where I should have bet but I think I was a bit excited about flopping the straight and wanted to extract as much money as possible. I thought it likely he missed the flop and didn't want to chase him away. Thinking about the hand now I would not have got any money out him anyway whether I bet or not if he had no hand but I would have got action if he had a piece of the flop. I must remember to bet my strong hands at this level and not slowplay them.
With hand 2 I put him on some kind of Ace and thought it likely he missed the flop, especially as he was quite loose. When he checked the turn I took that as weakness but you are probably right about his hand being AQ.
Was the move itself ok (raising the flop with basically a nothing hand) for the circumstances and just unfortunate to be against a real hand? Should I not be making this move at 25NL and just stick to basic poker (bet your strong hands fold your weak ones!)?

Hand 1, it is ok to check, but you must raise when opponent bets. You want more money in the pot before a 3rd spade falls.
Hand 2, with your read that opponent c-bets a lot, raising the flop is a decent play. The problem is you didn't raise enough. Once opponent bets, the pot is 4.25, and you raise only 1.50 more. You need to make about a pot size raise, to 5 or 6 dollars to have a chance of this working. Once your flop raise is called and the turn comes an A, any further moves at the pot are spewing chips. Opponent raised strongly preflop, and an A and Q are both on the board. Chances are much greater he has a hand than he doesn't, so there is no reason whatsoever to continue your bluff with a weak hand with very few outs. |
