Eh?
I didnt think anyone would have a 5, something like A5 wouldnt have been out of the question tho.
The more I think about it, the more this is a wayyy behind or way ahead hand. EIther someone has a 5, hit two pair iwth the A, or someone has a J, or nothing.

Does a check call sound better here?

I don't know. I think by not repping the turn you made it a bit harder for yourself...

A4 is possible... got a straight draw and liked it?

Don't know. Perhaps a check/call is better because if you bet that river a lot of people might re-raise you simmply because they thing you're trying to steal the pot.

A weak player could hold 55 here and not bet the flop for fear of a C/R with a J on board, plans to bet the turn but the scariest of cards comes out. Meh, but I think it unlikely. A5 surely bets the turn.

Think I prefer a check-call.

Bet/fold is a fine river line. You forgot to fold.

You have no idea what the guy has because of it and it killed you on the river when betting commenced. Atleast if you get called/raised on the turn you can start thinking about what they can have if it gets to the river.

If you aren't gonna bet the turn, you should probably check/call the river too if anything.

I'd like to hear the reasoning behind this. You're getting 5:1 to make this call. Do you both not feel that you are good here at least 15% of the time? Is it because the small raise is obviously not a bluff (to put it another way, it's a sucker bet)? Sorry for the stupid question, but I was in the check-call camp, and I'd just like to be clear because this is a common spot where I probably leak chips.
