The Latest in the Poker Industry

Shortly after the public hearing for Full Tilt Poker by the Alderney Gambling Control Commission began on July 26th, Full Tilt's legal team asked that the hearing instead be held behind closed doors. Due to the public nature of the scheduled hearing, sensitive material to companies other than Full Tilt would be released, potentially harming future business endeavors and Full Tilt customers. As a result the hearing was adjourned and postponed until further notice, but no later than September 15th. The AGCC released the following statement: "As a result of the arguments on behalf of FTP during the pre-hearing application the commissioners decided to adjourn the hearing as they felt it was in the best interests of FTP's customers. A key consideration in their decision was to allow FTP licensees 'to further pursue advanced commercial negotiations which could lead to a more beneficial outcome for player interests.'"

Bodog recently announced that it will be leaving the United States market at the end of 2011. Currently, the online casino, poker room, and sportsbook is licensed through Morris Mohawk Gaming, but come 2012 that license will expire and they will instead be licensed by the UK Gambling Commission. Bodog has decided to give their brand a fresh start with the new license, which includes closing its doors to the US. On December 31, US residents will no longer be able to access bodog.eu. They will however have the option to transfer over their funds to the new poker brand that will be created by the Morris Mohawk Gaming Group in 2012. The new MMGG brand will be licensed by the Kahnawake Gaming Commission.

PokerStars VIP Club Mega Month

August is VIP Club Mega Month at PokerStars! And they aren't kidding when they say, "Mega Month." Everyone knows just how great the VIP Club is at PokerStars, with its special VIP merchandise and tournaments, and now it's easier than ever to get to the level you want. For one month only PokerStars is requiring that you only need 10% of the total VPPs required to hit a level! That means for just 75 VPPs you can be a Silver Star, when normally it takes 750 VPPs! That's only $14 in tournament fees. Or, earn the 750 VPPs and you'll be a Platinum Star. That's just sick! This is such a great offer, it would be insane not to capitalize on it. It's just one more reason why PokerStars remains supreme when it comes to online poker.

Forum Fanatic | Flopped straight after steal, trouble on river ($5NL FR)

rowhousepd asks if he plays a hand to passively in our Beginners Circle Forum.

I'm in the SB w/ a nitty villain who tries to steal from the button. He's 14/4/3.2, ~300 hands, he only steals 14%, cbets 55%, folds vs flop cbet, 80%. No interesting reads.

MP2: $5.85
MP3: $0.50

BTN: $7.17
Hero (SB): $4.02
BB: $5.38

Preflop: Hero is SB with Ac Jh
4 folds, BTN raises to $0.12, Hero calls $0.10, BB folds
Ok, so possible mistake #1: should I have 3bet? I don't have enough stats on his fold vs resteal (probably bc he steals so infrequently). I know he's got something. I'm thinking I can assigning him a range of { 22+, A9s+, KTs+, QTs+, JTs, ATo+, KJo+, QJo }.

Flop: ($0.28) Kh Td Qs (2 players)
Hero checks, BTN bets $0.14, Hero calls $0.14
Wow, awesome. Broadway! I check, which was probably risky w/ his 50 cebt stat, but happily he fires and I call. (Mistakes #2 & 3 perhpas?) I was thinking that w/ no flushes flush draws out there, it would be safe to flat and let him catch up or bet his pair or his set. At this point I'm guessing he continues w/ all his broadway cards, but not low-medium pocket pairs.

Turn: ($0.56) 4s (2 players)
Hero bets $0.42, BTN calls $0.42
A blank. Perfect. 3/4 pot bet, a call. Ok I'll take it. He has at least a pair, and maybe we're chopping. But I can't narrow his range down too much, so maybe it's {99+,ATs+,KTs+,QTs+,JTs,ATo+,KJo+,QJo} which I'm crushing.

River: ($1.40) 4h (2 players)
Hero bets $1.05, BTN raises to $6.49 and is all-in
A somewhat safe river, I think. So I bet ... and he shoves!. Is this a snap call w/ a straight? And perhaps more importantly, did I play this hand too passively preflop and on the flop?

DanAronG: Since my mini lesson with bikes, I think I'd say bet/3b the flop, bet/3b shove the turn and bet fold the river both as played and if not got it in earlier when leading. But against this villain I don't mind calling preflop.

Hoopy: Think about reasons for 3betting, put him on a range that continues to a 3bet even if you have to guess. Will calling be +EV? If neither one is good then just fold.
I like leading here [flop] better than c/r'ing given his cbet stat (he might not bet 99-22, Tx/Qx, air), need to build a big pot though and he probably has something worth continuing with so raise.
[river] Need to put him on a range.
When he just calls your lead on the turn he reps weaker hands in general (Qx/JT/spades, some Kx), two pair like KQ/KT/QT will usually raise. Some of those have SDV on this river (AK/KJ/AQ/QJ) and will call. Hands that will jam this river are slowplayed boats/AJ/maybe AA. AJ/AA won't always just call turn then jam this river though imo + we have blockers.
I'd fold since he's passive and unlikely to be shoving less than a boat here.

Miffed22001: dear god raise the flop - hes raising 4% of hands and steals only strong hands - which he either totally whiffed or toally hit this flop and will allow you to get money in quickly

Poker News | Daniel Jungleman Cates Denied Entry to Canada

In a bizarre poker headline this week, American online poker pro Daniel Cates, who plays under the screen names Jungleman and w00ki3z, was denied entry into Canada. Cates was attempting to move to Canada to continue his online nosebleed play, as he posted on his Twitter July 26th, leaving for Vancouver tomorrow, time to crush online again :) Apparently the border patrol were not happy with his answers to their questions and sent him packing back to the United states.
Cates made a huge name for himself in the poker world the last two years by being the top online winner in cash games in 2010, winning over $5 Million. He then cemented his rising star status further by taking a $1 Million lead against Tom Dwan in their 50,000 hand Durrrr Challenge. Daniel Jungleman Cates has proved that he is one of the top nosebleed players in the world, as well as arguably the top heads-up NLHE specialist.

Poker Article | Poker Hand Strategy | Poker Starting Hands with Deep Stacks

In no-limit hold'em, the most popular form of poker in the world, what poker hands you choose to play pre-flop is mostly dependent on how well the hands are going to play post-flop. How well hands play post-flop depend on a few main factors, like the ability to make straights, ability to make flushes, ability to make high pairs, and the ability to make big pairs. However, stack sizes are also a major concern when choosing which poker hands to play.
Everyone knows that poker hands order themselves in a natural way when facing off pre-flop. For example, AK will be ahead of QJ all-in pre-flop. But not all examples are so clear-cut. Against a random hand all-in pre-flop, both Q6o and 98s have about 51% equity. But when there is a lot of money left in the stacks for post-flop play, the high card strength of Q6o becomes overpowered by the ability for 98s to make straights and flushes. The reason for this is that as stack sizes go up you can win more when you make a big hand, so implied odds go up. With deep stacks, having very strong hands less often is a better poker hand strategy than having mediocre strength hands more often.
