What's New

Merge Temporarily Blocks US Players

As a result of all the new traffic the Merge Poker Network has received since Black Friday, they have temporarily closed their doors to new US players. Just recently they blocked new signups for players from Louisiana, Maryland, Michigan, and New York before adding in the rest of the 46 states. It appears that Merge's resources for processing and player support have been swamped and need time to catch up and upgrade. It's estimated that within four to six weeks the network's doors will be open and they should be running at optimal performance for their US players, though it is unsure if doors will reopen to the four states that were already banned. Future legal action from the USA could also potentially affect when Merge decides to reopen their doors to new US players. Affected sites include Carbon Poker, Poker Nordica, RPM Poker, and Lock Poker.

WSOP 2011

Despite fears of Black Friday effects, it seems to be not all bad news when it comes to this year's World Series of Poker. In fact, a new record was set for the largest Omaha Hi-Lo tournament ever in WSOP history. Event 3 saw 925 entrants, 28% more than last year's event, creating a prizepool just shy of $1.25 million. Events 4 and 6 also topped out last year's participation numbers. While it is still early in the game and hard to say what kind of effects from Black Friday we have yet to see, so far it appears the WSOP is doing on par with last year. And with so many US players itching to play the game, it's not too much of a surprise. The big question remaining is how many players will show up for the Main Event. With PokerStars' and Full Tilt's satellites and prize packages out of the picture for US players and player accounts still frozen at Full Tilt and AP/UB, it's hard to speculate the turnout. Daniel Negreanu puts the numbers within the 3,000 range. Just have to wait and see. We wish all who are playing the best!

Phil Ivey and Full Tilt Poker

If you didn't already know, Phil Ivey filed a lawsuit against the software and marketing company for Full Tilt Poker, Tiltware. The lawsuit was filed early morning on June 1st in the District Court of Clark County, Nevada. In all, Ivey is suing Tiltware for over $150 million for damages in terms of lost income and reputation. In a press release published one day before the filing, Ivey stated that he is "deeply disappointed and embarrassed that Full Tilt players have not been paid money they are owed." Further he states that the electronically filed lawsuit is related to the unsettled player accounts and hopes that the lawsuit will help put those with the power to do so in immediate action to return player funds, both US and international. For a more in depth look, you can read the entire Phil Ivey complaint.

rpm: you could perhaps call so long as it's not with a plan of raising/felting on any flop on which you make top pair. i'd probably just fold though yeah.

scott_owen: if you call and miss, he leads into what do you do?
if you call and hit a Q, he leads into you what do you do?
if you call and hit an A, he leads into you what do you do?
i fold. feels too much like two pair or better is needed post flop to continue. and even then.. KK folds, as does JJ, QQ/AA has us owned.. value from AK, but i dont want to call 3 bets hoping to hit two pair when dominated like that.

rpm: obviously we arent folding TPTK or TP2ndK to one barrel (that answers situation 2 and 3). and i don't think floating air is a good idea versus what we can only assume is a relatively strong range (so #1 = fold)

bikes: i'm pretty sure i'm calling here almost 100 procent, you have a top 3% hand here and position and in a spot where people 3b pretty wide

Poker News | FullTilt Pokers Announcement Lacks Answers

Black Friday is now officially over a month and half over with. Most U.S. players seem to have figured out a new site or travel arrangements to allow themselves to play at their old sites. Non-U.S. players are obviously having an easier time figuring out where they want to play, usually based on which site is now carrying the most traffic. PokerStars was relatively quick in giving their players (U.S. included) their money by withdrawals but FullTilt Poker seems to be lagging far behind.
For United States players, their money is still frozen or stuck (however you want to spell it) at FullTilt. To make matters even worse, their support team has been very short or unresponsive to many questions. On May 30, FTPDoug, a FullTilt Poker representative, posted a few new answers at the 2+2 message boards.

Poker Article | How to Review Your Sessions

By Spenda
One of the fastest ways to improve your game is to review your previous sessions. This is typically done through programs such as PokerTracker or Hold'em Manager which store your hand histories and break them down into hundreds of key statistics. If you are not currently using PokerTracker or Hold'em Manager you are missing out on a huge tool in improving your play. These programs will help players identify leaks, understand their opponents' tendencies, and track results at different times, levels, and games. There can be a bit of an information overload when you first begin using these programs so keeping things simple will help you analyze your play. Players should look at key poker fundamentals, specific hand histories which gave them trouble, and a few other concepts which can help them take their games to the next level.
When reviewing your database or a certain session there are a few pre-flop fundamentals we want to explore. We know the money in poker tends to flow to the left. This means players who have position in pots tend to win more money than those who do not. Having a positional advantage will allow you to gain more information about your opponents hand thus giving you the ability to make better decisions throughout the hand. This begs the question, how do we use PokerTracker or Hold'em Manager to analyze positional awareness?

Poker Dictionary | Hanger

A hanger is when the bottom card of the deck sticks out further than the rest of the cards. This is usually a tell that the dealer is dealing from the bottom of the deck (a form of cheating).
Example: In Rounder, Worm is caught "with a hanger." The cops punished him for dealing from the bottom of the deck.
