We have recently added a new category to our Poker Articles library. As with all of our poker strategy guides and essays, those in this new Poker Psychology section are written exclusively for us by your fellow FTR poker community members! The psychological aspects of playing poker can be challenging to master. Sound strategy is obviously important, but the best players also develop sound minds to handle any situation that may come their way. These essays will help you strengthen this part of your game. Forum Fanatic: Let's Talk About Open-Limping the SB

mcatdog invites members to discuss the dynamics of open-limping from the small blind with this opening post.
Most people don't defend their BB nearly enough facing a raise from the SB. Against someone with a wide range, in position, getting a discount and closing the action, you should defend even more hands than you think you should.
If someone folds too much in the BB, I just raise anything I want to play in the SB, but against tough players I've started open limping a lot. The reason is I think even hands as strong as A9o, JTo, 56s etc. may not be strong enough to open-raise profitably against a good player. Instead of just giving people 80% walks though, I like to open-limp some hands. Many people's first reaction is to assume I am a weak player and raise with ATC, which isn't a bad thing at all for me as long I mix in some limp-calls and limp-reraises with strong hands and some limp-reraise bluffs.

Poker News: SC Judge Again Declares Poker a Game of Skill, Not Chance

PPA Press Release – Washington, DC (October 2, 2009) – The Poker Players Alliance (PPA), the leading poker grassroots advocacy group with more than one million members nationwide (nearly 10,000 in South Carolina), today lauded the ruling of a South Carolina court that confirmed that poker is a game of skill, and thus should not be considered gambling under the law.
“Poker is not a crime in South Carolina or anywhere else, and we are grateful to the court for compiling the overwhelming evidence that proves this case and protects the rights of players,” said John Pappas, executive director of the PPA. “This ruling is fully consistent with the declarations of other judges and juries across the country that Texas Hold’em is clearly a game of predominant skill and adults who play should not be criminalized.”

Poker Article: Mindset, Technique and Money Management

In this excerpt, Carl "The Dean" Sampson begins to explain what a poker player can learn from the business of Wall Street.
I am going to reveal something that I think is of immense use to any poker player. While it is critical to know how to play the game well, this is only a tiny part of being a successful poker player. Playing poker has so many similarities to financial trading that it really is quite spooky.
Some of the most valuable pieces of information with regard to me improving my poker game have come from reading financial books either on trading or the stockmarket. As you begin to educate yourself in this subject, you will constantly be reminded of these three little areas that have to be mastered in order to make money, not just on trading, but in poker too.
There really is no mystique to making money in poker. You need to get your mindset, technique and money management areas sorted.

Poker Dictionary: Blocking Bet

A bet made that is relatively small in order to prevent your opponent from betting too much if you check and used for pot-control to keep the pot smaller. Players use a blocking bet in various situations like trying to draw at a flush or a straight cheaply or just keeping the pot small when you only have a one-pair type of hand.
Example: The flush draw on the turn was perfect for me to use a blocking bet so I could draw cheaply and perhaps get a free showdown on the river.

Jack Sawyer: Ari Gold is the best character I've ever seen in a tv show. The most well-acted at least. The guy who plays him is just amazing.
