Despite the recognizably Italian moniker, MaMaMia Poker is, in fact, a South American company. More popularly known as MMPoker, it originates from Chile and now has its headquarters in Costa Rica. They aim to tap into the mine of potential poker players in the area - as well as appealing to the European market.

MMPoker is a member of the well-known Microgaming network (also known as the Prima Poker network), which provides services to poker clients such as Ladbrokes and 32Red along with a host of others. Based on the Isle of Man, a part the UK, Microgaming is one of the co-founders of "e-Commerce and Online Gaming Regulation and Assurance" (eCogra) which seeks to provide a common standard of fair play across a number of different sites. Microgaming also claims to have developed the first fully online casino software over a decade ago.

Cash game players at any level seem well catered to at MMPoker, where stakes start as low as $0.05-$0.10 and climb as high as $200-$400 for No-limit Hold'em. Limit players will not have quite as much choice at the higher stakes, but tables still reach a respectable $150-$300 on the top end. Unfortunately, these higher level tables are rarely in use. Off-peak, there was not a full table above $10-$20 and, while this is enough action for the majority of players, those with money to burn may struggle to find a game. Happily for most, though, the low limit tables still seemed fairly lively even during the off-peak hours.

Those daring few who stray away from Hold'em will have a solid variety of games to choose from. Razz, 5 Card Draw, Omaha, Omaha Hi-Lo, 7 Card Stud and 5 Card Stud are all on offer for the enterprising player. However, when traffic numbers are lower the players are very few and far between. A recent visit showed only one person on a 5 Card Draw table, two people playing Razz, and everyone else playing Hold'em.

Those of you who prefer Sit and Go to Cash Games are equally well catered to in terms of buy-in variety. Single table SnG's start very low at $0.09 + $0.01 and progress all the way up to $1,000 + $50. However, if you want to test your skills against higher numbers of players then the multi-table Sit & Goes are what you're looking for. Beginning at a modest $2.50 + $0.25 leading up to the $1,000 + $50 ceiling, most multi-table players will be able to find something at their level. Player volume here is a similar story as it is for the cash games. Although there is a decent amount of play at the lower levels, at the mid to high buy-ins during off peak times there is little to no action on MaMaMia Poker. Above around $30 + $3 there were only a handful of tournaments running. For the non-Hold'em players things are a little brighter on the Sit and Go scene. A fair number of SnG tables for the majority of offered games are running at the lower stakes.

MMPoker offers a reasonable range of MTT's - from $1 + $0.10 up to $200 + $15. Fields for these tournaments usually fall somewhere in the mid hundreds, albeit with fluctuations either way. As with many other rooms, when the weekend rolls around there are big money guaranteed tournaments to be played. On Saturday there is a $100 + $10 buy-in event with a prize pool of at least $50,000. The big one, as usual, is on a Sunday: $150,000 guaranteed prize pool in a $60 + $5 buy-in tournament.

Many sites on the Microgaming network offer points that reward regular players for their allegiance. Although there is mention of 'Mamma Mia Points' hidden within their software, there is no other sign of this either on the website or elsewhere within the client. Regardless of whether or not this is a planned addition or something that has been discontinued, there is currently no points system on offer.

MMPoker's Software Interface/Usability

Your first port of call if you're interested in playing at MMPoker will probably be the software download page. However, if you are not a Windows user then your best bet will be to try the in-browser java client (although this is IE and Firefox compatible only).

Once you boot up the software and finish registration you'll be presented with what, at first glance, is a standard lobby screen. Although it might initially appear a bit cluttered, clever design and a well chosen color scheme actually make this easier to use than many of its competitors. At the left side different bars delineate between Cash Games, Sit and Go, etc, and expand upon clicking to reveal a file-tree like menu. This is similar to a number of other sites: first you select between games which expand down into different styles and different stakes. While this will be familiar to many online poker players, for some reason things seem a little clearer and easier to work with here.

The whole software package has recently been redesigned and it shows. Everything is in blue and green (two colors which stand out from each other very well) and the whole program looks sleek and modern. The table list, on the other hand, is similar to almost every site around - and given the ubiquitous nature of this format, that is probably a wise decision.

Once you get playing you'll find that the tables are even easier on the eye. Small squares display avatars (if you have chosen one) and also display the action that players have just taken (raise, fold, etc). Each different action has a separate colored background, enabling you to quickly ascertain an opponent’s behavior at a glance. The cards and chips are clear and easy to read, and the betting options and buttons are simple and well designed. The betting slider is an industry standard, although a little prettier than normal, and offers 2, 3, or 4 times the minimum bet buttons for ease of use.

One neat feature is that when you win a pot the chips in play will stack themselves into a pile, fly over to your avatar, and sprinkle themselves into your stack. This is one of a few eye-catching animations that keep things interesting while grinding through a cash game. The tables are also resizable, within some limitations.

One of the other features worth a mention is the tournament lobby. Although largely similar to the lobbies you see in most clients, MMPoker has added an attractive sports scoreboard-type box which displays all the important tournament information (level, blinds, no. of players, etc) in a remarkably clear way.

Another option available to you is to create your own private table or tournament. Password protection means that you and only a select group of your friends will be able to buy-in to the event.

The bonus is relinquished in $100 increments, so you can enjoy the spoils of your promotion before you've cleared the total amount. With no points system to worry about it, working out how you clear the money is a far simpler equation than with many of MMPoker’s competitors. You simply receive $100 of your bonus for every 2000 raked hands you play. A hand is considered raked when a player is dealt cards and the rake reaches at least $.25 (25 cents). In order for a raked hand to count, you just need to be dealt cards preflop. So you can fold, and if the pot becomes raked, you will get credit. Also, you must play at least $1/2 NL PL or FL for the raked hands to qualify. There is also a $20 minimum deposit required in order to qualify for the bonus.

It is worth noting that when you have played the 2000 hands required for $100 it will not automatically be credited to your account. There are a number of $200 and $500 freerolls running every day, most requiring that you have played at least one raked hand in the last 24 hours in order to qualify. One neat twist to the usual freeroll formula is that you are rewarded with extra starting chips according to the number of raked hands you have played over the past day: 10 raked hands will get you an extra $750; 25 will give $1500; 50 gives $2250; and 100 rewards you with $3000. These are much better than standard freerolls as they not only require raked hands to play, but give a bonus award based on how much you play.
