Play by Play - Check-Raise

Play by Play - Check-Raise

As mentioned in another Play-By-Play, AK - Big Slick - is a premium Texas holdem hand. This hand should be raised to fold out weaker drawing hands. This time, I'm the one holding the weak hand, hoping to see the flop for cheap. Luckily the late position player chooses to limp in, allowing me to see the flop - and it was a great flop for my hand.

I'm holding KTo, a very mediocre hand, a hand that I usually will try to limp in with, but sometimes fold in early position. I decided to play this hand in early position since the table seemed pretty passive, a lot of flops were being seen with unraised pots. I got lucky that this was the case with my hand.

I flopped top two pair, and slow-play the first round of betting, only betting $1. The late position player is holding AK, top pair, top kicker. He plays his hand pretty softly, raising me only $1. I know that I have him beat at this moment, so I decide to just call his bet, with the plan to check-raise him on the turn.

The turn card is a Queen, a bad card for me since there is now a higher two-pair and a straight possibility. However, I stick with my original plan, and go for the check-raise. My opponent bites, betting $4, I check-raise another $4. He just calls, so I pretty much know that I've won the hand. I throw in a final small bet, which should be callable, and my opponent indeed calls that bet as well.

He was tied to his losing hand, I don't blame him because it was a good hand to be holding, but this is why you raise pre-flop with a premium hand and fold out the weak hands that need to get lucky.
