Slow playing is a strategy used to deceive your opponent into thinking you have a weaker hand than you actually have. By initially playing your hand weak, you are giving confidence to your opponent that he/she has the stronger hand, thus inducing your opponent to bet into your winning hand. The end result is a much larger pot. There is risk to slow playing a hand, it should be done carefully and only under the right circumstances. I've been burned by playing too slow, allowing my opponent to draw the cards needed to beat my hand. You should be very careful when using a slow play tactic, as this related hand shows: Bad Slow Play.
The slow play tactic assumes more risk for more reward. But you can minimize your risk by using this strategy
when you have a very strong hand, the board is safe, and the likelihood of one more card
giving your opponent the winning hand is very minimal.
