Texas Hold'em Hand Play-By-Play Example - Bad Beat
Bad beats are a part of the game. Usually, bad beats are delivered by bad players.
This comes with the territory. We target bad players, and earn our money from them.
Suffering the bad beat is to be expected every once in a while against these players.
The below beat is as ridiculous as they come. I flop two pair and bet it out. Player4 (idiot)
stays in the pot with nothing, and hits a runner-runner to make a straight on the river.
I asked him after the hand what he was doing in the pot, and he just responded, "I felt something
good."
So, this is some of the competition we face online - people who "feel something good" playing
horrible hands and relying on miracle cards to win. But this is also our bread and butter.
So, bad beats are going to happen. The key is not to let the hand put you on tilt. Part of playing
poker is maintaining control, discipline, and patience. A beat like this can certainly alter your
play, even if you are mindful to be careful after a bad beat.
So, after this hand, I took a break. This can be a difficult thing to do, because your first
reaction is to immediately try to enact revenge. But, I know better (I've lost enough money
on tilt), so I took a break, had a smoke, took care of some chores, made myself a drink, and then
sat back down when I was calm and refreshed.
The break did me well, I made back the money I lost on this particular hand plus much more. Bad beats
are only temporary set backs, be patient and just continue to apply your strategy and knowledge, you'll
make it all back.
