Smooth Call



A smooth call is the act of just calling a bet or raise with a very powerful hand in order to conceal your strength and keep all the attention on the initial raiser. This is one of those tricky type plays that I would not recommend doing too often. However, the smooth call can be very deceiving and lead to larger pots.

In the below hand, you'll see that I am seated at the small blind and am dealt Big Slick. I smooth call the minimum raise and wait for the flop. To my utter joy, I flop AAJ, so I've hit pretty big. Again, since I smooth called pre-flop, my opponents probably think I have nothing. I parlay that strategy along with a check here, looking for the check raise.
The action is perfect, one player bets $5, another player calls, and then it's back to me. Now, I go for the kill, and re-raise $15. Check it out:
