Elimination Blackjack on UB
|
Elimination Blackjack has finally found its way online. UB has recently started spreading blackjack tournaments which not only pit players against the dealer, but also against each other. The goal of elimination blackjack is to accumulate the largest chip stack during a 30 hand match. After hands 8, 16, and 25, players are eliminated according to who has the lowest number of chips. Elimination Blackjack is a lot of fun and contains much more strategy than regular blackjack.
Each tournament will consist of at least two 30 hand rounds depending on the number of entrants. Each table (round) will contain six or seven players, and the number of rounds and players advancing through each round will vary from event to event. For the scheduled tournaments in the UB Lobby, there have to be at least 30 players registered or the event will be cancelled.
Once the tournament begins players will bet anywhere from $500 to $25,000 on each hand. Players start with $25,000 in tournament chips in the preliminary rounds and $100,000 in chips for the final table. There is a rotating marker (like the dealer button in Texas Hold’em) which moves clockwise after each hand, forcing a new player to start the betting. Players receive up to 25 seconds to make their decisions during normal play; however, during elimination hands, players only receive 10 seconds. Finally, a “secret bet” can be used at any time (one per round) to hide your wager from your opponents. In the end the player with the most chips at the end of hand 30 wins. If before the final hand there is only one person with chips, he/she will automatically win. As always, standard blackjack rules apply.
There will be a lot of gamblers and recreational players taking part in these tournaments. Understanding some simple elimination blackjack strategy will go a long way in making sure you don’t leave your event empty handed. First of all, the secret bet is an extremely beneficial tactic when used properly. The best time to use this secret bet is on an elimination hand when you have to bet early. Being able to hide your wager amount during an important juncture can really come in handy. This will force your opponents to guess how much to wager because they will have no idea how much you bet. Make sure to take advantage of your secret bet, as it’s worthless if you never use it.
If you find yourself up against more seasoned players, it can be beneficial to take an aggressive approach. Chances are your opponents will make better decisions than you when your stack sizes are similar. However, if you are able to accumulate a nice amount of chips early on in the round, you can put a lot of pressure on your opponents, causing them to take more risks than they are accustomed. If you happen to build a large stack, you can go back to playing conservatively, as your opponents scramble through each elimination.
Much like in Texas Hold’em, position matters greatly in elimination blackjack. You should make sure to take in all of the information you can when being one of the last players to act. Also, make sure to pay special attention to the person to your immediate right, as you will be acting after them on all but one hand per round. As you improve and gain more experience, you will be able to use this extra information to your advantage, which will lead to more wins and higher profits.
Finally, you need to be willing to gamble. A lot of plays which typically cost you money in regular blackjack can be the correct decision in elimination blackjack. The best example is splitting a pair of tens, which you would never do in normal blackjack. However, if you are well behind on chips and need to make a comeback, it is a necessary risk you must take. Splitting the tens could be the difference between winning and losing.
Elimination blackjack is fun format which tends to attract all types of players. The tournament structure is great for those looking to play against other people, instead of the house.
