Gambling a risky venture

There are many things to keep in mind when playing poker, especially when it comes to the law. State and local authorities arrested 25 people for a Texas hold 'em tournament Tuesday night. It was an illegal game. People paid $15 dollars to participate.

"A good rule of thumb is, if you're playing for chips, you're probably okay. But if you're playing for cash, it's a much different story," says State Liquor Board Official Bob Cook.

However, a friendly game at home for money is not necessarily illegal. Poker games are legal if there is a relationship between the participants other than gambling, and the entire pot goes to the winner. The host cannot take a cut.

There was a law that allowed non profit organizations to host poker tournaments with entry fees for charity, but it was repealed when too many people abused the law.
