World Poker Tour Championship: Down To 19 Players Published: 2006-04-24
After 5 grueling levels of play, we are down to the final 19 players. Play will resume at 12 PM PDT Sunday. Three more players with substantial payout odds to win have been eliminated from last night's play. They included Ross Boatman (who would have paid 26 to 1) and Matt Lefkowitz at 21.5 to 1 odds. Freddy Deeb was also sent home.
Coming into Sunday and representing Miami, Florida, Vanessa Rousso came in with approximately 880K in her stack. She came over the top of Patrik Antonius' raise and he made the call. He showed A-K, and Rousso turned over T-T. Antonius caught no help and Rousso stacked up near 2M. Rousso was also featured last week on "Calvin Ayre's Wild Card Poker".
After coming into the day with a huge chip stack, Patrik Antonius continued his sharp play throughout most of the day. Then he lost a 2.8M pot to James Van Alstyne when his Q-Q were cracked by K-T, taking him down to 1.6M.
Since then he has dropped a few more pots, including the A-K v. T-T hand against Vanessa Rousso, and he now finds himself between a rock and a hard place. He certainly has the talent to pull off an amazing comeback, but with the blinds and antes this high it will be a tough challenge.
James Van Alstyne was listed with payout odds of 20 to 1 at entering the World Poker Tour Championship. Meanwhile, Carlos Zambrano has been on a tear today - his chips are stacked fifty high and two rows deep. He just took out Luis Pires when his 6-6 held up against Pires' Q-5. Pires took home $87,875 for his 22nd place finish.
POKER: HANDY TIPS TO STEAR YOU TO A HUGE PAYOUT Published: 2006-04-29
BETFRED POKER
By Fred Done
AS the Betfred Million approaches I thought I would give out a few tips about playing multi table tournaments online so that you have the best chance for qualifying, and then hopefully winning the main event!
The first tip is to play tight early and remember that the tournament will last a long time.
There is no need to make large bets early and risk going out.
Obviously if you have a very good hand then it may be a good move to be aggressive but if you have an average hand it will probably be best to fold and wait, because those stronger hands will arrive.
The blinds are very small early on so winning small amounts is not going to improve your chip situation in the long run, and you will also leave yourself susceptible to weaker opponents drawing you out.
The plays you make early should be against weak players.
Every large tournament has weak players and they need to be identified and eliminated by you to make your chip position as strong as possible when coming up against the better players.
You will be able to tell the weak players by their loose play and when you get a decent hand you can take maximum advantage.
You are likely to be on a table with the same opponents for long periods of time so pay attention to their game.
If you can establish betting patterns then you are going to be in a great position when you come up against them with a strong hand.
One obvious tell is the size of their bets relative to the strength of their hands.
You will be able to see when many players have a strong hand as their bets will be proportionally larger.
In the middle stages of the tournament don't worry if you aren't receiving strong hands. You should be able to get by for a while simply by stealing the blinds.
If you don't steal them early in the tournament, when they aren't really worth stealing anyway, then you will be feared in the later stages when you do start to bet aggressively.
This should stand you in good stead to reach the final table!
The Betfred million continues at Betfred Poker.
It is the biggest online poker tournament in the UK and if you can qualify you will find yourself fighting it out for a share of $1 million.
