Landlady Lisa battles stars to be poker queen Published: 2006-03-16
By Duncan Gibbons
POKER ace Lisa Bishop could be crowned queen of cards next week - just three months after picking up a deck for the very first time.
The 37-year-old pub landlady has been dealt the chance of a lifetime by winning through to the final of the world's first women-only tournament.
And she will be battling it out against superstar actress Stephanie Beacham, who appeared in Bad Girls, Dynasty and Beverley Hills 90210, and Coronation St and Holby City star Tina Hobley.
Lisa earned her place in the competition, which carries a top prize of $40,000 and a huge diamond ring, by winning two qualifying heats on internet gambling site www.888.com.
The mum-of-two, who until recently thought a "full house" was a busy night at the pub and a "royal flush" a toilet at Buckingham Palace, is competing against 35 of the world's elite in a televised showdown in London.
The final takes place at the Poker Den from Saturday to Tuesday.
Lisa, co-licensee of The Peacock Inn, in Newbold Road, Rugby, with fiancé Phil Cosgrove, said: "I only started playing about three months ago when one of our customers brought in a poker set.
"Phil joined 888.com to play on-line and I just watched him and would carry on if he went to the toilet. We also sit here a few nights a week and play.
"To get to the final I was playing for 4˝ hours and I was nearly ripping my hair out - the tension in the back office - you could cut it with a knife.
"When I realised I won I was screaming, we just kept grinning at each other."
Lisa said: "It will be the experience of a lifetime - an all-expenses paid trip to London and mixing with the famous crowd.
"I am not even thinking about the money, I just want to go and play my game, but if I come away with something, even better.
"We're getting married in August so to win would be the icing on the cake."
Lisa said common sense, and a huge slice of luck, were key to winning, but she doesn't think much to the psychology of the game.
"You have got to know when to throw in your cards and wait for two good ones to come up, and when to bet big, but it really does depend on the cards you are dealt," she said.
Organiser Matt Robinson, of 888.com, said: "Women are every bit as good as the guys on the card table and the quality of the games on this tour just proves it.
"It's only a matter of time before we have a female world champion."
