ONE OF the attractions of being a tournament poker player is that it provides an excellent excuse to follow the sun Published: 2004-12-01
POKER
Independent, The (London), December, 2004 by Nic Szeremeta
ONE OF the attractions of being a tournament poker player is that it provides an excellent excuse to follow the sun. The have-bankroll- will- travel gang are spoilt for choice in January with two major events in sunnier climes than Europe in mid-Winter.
Many of the high-rollers will be heading off to Tunica, Mississippi, where the programme begins on 5 January and climaxes with a $10,000 nolimit hold'em competition three weeks later. It is not just the $1.5m guaranteed first prize which attracts the big bucks brigade. The live cash action at the Horseshoe and Gold Strike Casinos is gigantic with pot of $100,000 plus not uncommon. The drawback for the middle-of-the-road player is that Tunica is stuck in the middle of nowhere. The nearest shop is a 20 miles away and there is little else to do all day but eat, drink, sleep and gamble.
Many Europeans will be heading in the opposite direction to the Crown Casino in Melbourne, Australia, where the action commences on the same day. Feature event there is the Aussie Millions, another no- limit happening with a buy-in of 10,000 Australian dollars, around pounds 4,000.
Over the past three years the field has grown steadily - but not as fast as the organisers would have liked. Tony Bloom of England is the current title holder having beaten off 121 rivals 12 months ago. This year the field is likely to double and possibly even hit 300 players. This is mainly due to the backing given by the online poker room PartyPoker.com, which has run qualifiers and is sending a group of 100 participants.
The satellites in the virtual poker world were on offer from just $5 up to $600 and the winners picked up not only a seat in the main event but a travel and accommodation package as well. For the tournament experts this is very good news indeed. Although some major competitions have been won by online qualifiers, many of those used to playing at home on their PCs are a bit overawed when it comes to sitting down with real flesh and blood players.
The Brits have a good record in the event and two years ago also supplied the winner, Peter Costa. The other feature event in the Melbourne programme is the World Speed Poker Championships which will be filmed for television. Why the "speed"? Well there are two dealers at each table - one shuffling and the other putting out the cards. And the players are only allowed 15 seconds to make each move. There's different.
