POKER
Independent, The (London), January, 2005 by Nic Szeremeta

THE PLANET'S biggest virtual poker room PartyPoker.com has moved into the new year with a new tournament concept which it has named Steps. Recognising that not all players have the same size bankrolls and that the amount they wish to risk varies, the site has launched a competition which can be entered at several different levels.

Two types of no-limit hold'em event are on offer - either single- table affairs or multi-table competitions. The buy-ins for both are the same. At the bottom end of the buy-in scale entry costs just $11. At the top end, step five where the money is paid out, the buy- in is $1,000. In between, in steps two to four, the entry costs $50, $200 and $500.

The idea is that players can join in at any level to suit their pockets. At each step participants can win seats at the next level. For example, at the $200 step survival into the last three from a table of 10 wins a place at a $500 table.

The rewards for success are considerable for the small bankroll brigade. In the single-table series the prize pool is $10,000 with the winners collecting $4,500 and the multi-table series pays a $9,000 first prize - not bad for $11.

One thing the innovative concept underlines is the scope for new ideas which are possible on the internet but impossible in a land- based poker room.

If a "real" card room were to run such an event it would need to be the size of the Albert Hall and a staff the size of the audience at the proms. Online, though, it is no problem. What is a problem, though, is how to get in the money.

With such a serious amount on offer 24/7 the strategists have not been slow to work out the optimum methods of play. They're key consideration appears to be that survival is more important than winning pots.

The tournaments begin with players having 1,000 each in chips and the blinds at the 10-15 level moving to 15-30 for the next round.

One expert recommends not entering any pot at these first two levels unless the player holds either K-K or A-A. Even pocket queens or A-K are regarded as a tricky proposition.

Part of the idea is to hang on to ones chips until the blinds increase to 100-200 - and then go on a stealing spree, raising on every opportunity to force the opposition to pass.

The other part is to let looser opponents weaken their chip positions by over optimistic play.

Tight is the rule of the day.
