Intra-State Sportsbetting Gains Steam in California

Officials in California are lending strong support to a bill which could legalize sportsbetting within the state’s borders. The proposal, known as Senate Bill 1390, has received unanimous approval from the California Senate Governmental Organization Committee. Each of the panel’s thirteen members will now be tasked with recruiting their contemporaries to the cause.

Put forth by California State Senator Roderick Wright, Bill 1390 would allow citizens to place wagers on sports and other athletic events. This would cover games on both the collegiate and professional levels, according to iGaming Business. Licensed racetracks and satellite betting parlors would be able to offer wagering services to their customers, should the bill pass into law. In order to obtain this privilege, all establishments would need to submit an application to either the California Racing Board or the California Gambling Control Commission.

In the end, it comes down to money. Legislators throughout America are eying the potential profits that regulated gaming could bring in.

“Californians,” said Wright, “spend multiple billions of dollars going to places where this is legal.”

Since 2008, Wright has served as the Representative of the 25th District. This includes such cities as Los Angeles, Long Beach, and San Pedro. The career Democrat previously served as the Representative for the 48th District in the California State Assembly. He is perhaps most known for SB 827, a bill hailed by the Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce as the largest job creation bill of 2009.
