Canada has started taking action towards online gambling which will see the withdrawal of some poker rooms from the Canadian market. We've seen this happen in other parts of the world and have very negative effects with the legality of online poker being called into question and no definite answers presenting themselves. Fortunately, rather than a ban on online gambling Canada is moving in a much more positive direction towards regulation of the pastime, but as with any change in legislation we can still sadly expect to experience some upheaval and the departure of some Canadian poker sites. It must be noted that online poker is LEGAL in both the US and Canada, even if some rooms do not accept players from those locations.

The United States Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act is probably the most infamous piece of legislation on the subject, known the world over by online gamblers for the difficulties it imposes upon would-be US players in poker rooms and casinos alike. The act made efforts to stop the flow of money between banks and online gaming sites and caused many poker sites pulled out of the US market, despite online poker still being legal as it is deemed a skill game rather than pure gambling.

Fortunately for Canadian poker players we are not seeing a repeat of this poor choice in legislation, but rather a step in a very positive direction. British Columbia launched North America's first government-run online casino in 2010 and was followed by other Canadian provinces. In so doing the government has acknowledged the legality of online gaming, and made steps to better regulate Canadian poker sites in the interests of protecting players.

There are, however, casinos and poker rooms that have withdrawn from the Canadian market but it must be noted that this is not because online gambling has become illegal, rather these sites were not willing or not able to meet the new regulations. Canadian poker sites which meet provincial regulations are still very much legal and players are in no danger at all of breaking the law.

We're also seeing some differences between provinces in Canada, with the likes of British Columbia and Ontario firmly behind the idea of government-run casinos and the introduction of regulation, whereas provinces such as Newfoundland are showing little interest in following the trend. In the future, major online poker rooms may make distinctions between provinces and which players they accept, but at this stage sites seem to be taking an "all or nothing" approach to whether or not they will open their doors to Canadian players.
