Mad Mojo Monkey's Bovada Review (part 2/2) by MadMojoMonkey on 15 Nov 2012

rating 2 / 5
7. 100% deposit bonus is “unlocked” by accumulating points, which are awarded based on amount of rake the player pays in the first month. *note: this is very tough to clear playing recreationally, or with only a single table at 5NL. I only cleared ~80% (more than 1/2 of it was in the final week when I was playing 4 tables).
8. HUD support is useless for vital post-flop stats – playing 25NL and above is a different game with a much higher variance than other sites. All players have a thinner edge on each other which means the rake is tougher to beat.
9. No rakeback – although, I understand that rakeback is slowly being dropped from many sites.
10. Seat hopping is difficult. If you leave a seat (for any reason, even disconnect), then you can’t sit back down at the same table until 5 minutes later. It is likely that there will be no available seat when the 5 minutes elapses. However, when a new seat opens, all the notes players had on you (or your notes on them) are gone. If you take notes on a scratch paper or document, then you can retain notes on the table, while they lose notes on you.
11. They have single-player blackjack tables accessible from the poker lobby.

There are plenty of unique features on Bovada that make it an interesting choice for online grinding.
1. Bovada accepts deposits from all USA residents. Payouts take 2 – 8 weeks, depending on ?????, but they are reliable.
2. Bovada has excellent customer support… widely reputed by players as the best in the biz.
3. Bovada only accepts accounts from the USA and Canada.
a. The player pool is medium sized. There are enough players to keep the NLHE games going, but not a huge number of tables to choose from. Table selection is limited.
b. The fact that only a few time-zones are represented by the player pool means the games dry up starting around midnight and are almost non-existent after about 2:00 AM. I don’t know when the action picks up again, but it is back in swing by 9:00 AM.
c. Games are pretty soft during work hours. After 4:00 PM, the player pool doubles (at least) and plenty of the evening players have a lot more gamble in them than the daytime grinders. They’re not necessarily better, but their spazziness serves to balance their ranges in a way that is more fun/painful.
4. Anonymous players
a. There are no screen names – identifying villains is impossible, but it goes both ways.
b. Notes on villains do not persist; you can take notes on villains at the table, but once either you or the villain leave the table, the notes are deleted.
c. HUD support is limited (no PT or HEM), but since anonymous players, stats can’t accumulate over multiple sessions, so it is rare to play more than 50 hands with any single villain, which means that most HUD info is useless based on small sample size anyway (even VPIP/PFR aren’t strongly reliable). This is good for a financially strapped beginner or a recreational player. Not only is there no need to buy a HUD software (potentially doubling your initial investment), but also most villains will not be using one, either. Even if they do use a HUD, there is not much more they can know that you can't know by observation and note-taking.
d. All hole cards are revealed in the HH starting 24 hours after the table session is closed! You can see what everyone was dealt, and whether or not a villain was bullying you when you folded TPTK to a flop 3-bet.
5. Outside of NLHE, there is precious little action.
a. If you are an Omaha or 7-stud player, you will find very few games to choose from.
b. There are no Badugi or 5-card draw games.
c. There are no mixed games.
6. The lowest cash games are $0.02/$0.05 tables.
a. There is no 2NL or 4NL, which means a bigger starting BR is necessary to play.
b. The 5NL tables play like 2NL tables on other sites, so there is more dead money in the pot for the same villain skill level.

NUTS: Bovada Poker is a re-brand of the popular Bodog Poker. Bodog is one of the most trusted brands so you know you're in good hands. Bovada offers players a gargantuan $1,000 welcome. Besides a fantstic bonus and poker room, Bovada hosts a Sportsbook, Casino, and Horse Track. In short, Bovada is the only stop you need to make if you enjoy online gambling. Boavada accepts all US players and now supports Mac users.
-
BEATS: 4.9% fee on deposits ($4.90 on every $100). During early-morning hours, there aren't too many players online. Also, the bonus is difficult to clear at low-stakes. Finally, some players may find the anonymous tables unacceptable.

Bovada.lv Overview
Bovada is a new room opened on 12/14/11 which is operated by the same people as Bodog. Bodog Poker made the decision to pull out of the US market and instead of banning all US play, opened a new room - Bovada Poker.
Bovada hosts a number of poker games. Besides Texas Hold'Em, Bovada boasts Omaha and 7 Card Stud variants. Ring gsme action is primarily concentrated to low-stakes No Limit Hold'Em; however, there are always a few tables of Omaha and 7 Card Stud running. Sit and Go action at Bovada is suprisingly lively. The room offers a healthy variety of games, stakes, and tables with regards to SNGs. Multi-table tournaments are also popular. Bovada's Sunday $100,000 Guaranteed is one of the best values on the internet.
During peak hours, Bodog has about 1,000 players online. In the current legal environment, that isn't too bad. Online poker has been dealt two black eyes by the UIGEA in 2006 and the events of 2011's Black Friday.
Cashouts at Bovada are relatively quick. Checks are the most popular method and are usually recieved in a week after your payout has been approved.
Overall, Bovada is a solid poker room, and perhaps the best choice for US players. Although Bovada doesn't have the game selection of a giant like PokerStars, the brand is reputable and has adapted to changes in the legal and regulatory environment.
The only convenient deposit option for US players is to use a Visa card. However, these deposits are subject to a 4.9% fee, which is pretty large. So a $1,000 deposit would charge you an additional $49.
Bovada Poker Software & Interface
Bovada now supports Mac! If you're in the US and use a Mac, you may have found your choices limited. Well, not anymore - all Mac players can play for real money at Bovada in their new Mac client. Try it out now!
Like Bodog Poker, the Bovada software has its highs and lows. Overall, its poker software is solid.
When you log-in, you're greeted with an edgy black-red theme. On the left-hand side of Bovada's lobby, you can view your balance, tournament tickets, and poker points. You can also visit the cashier, make changes to yout account, and adjust your prefrences.
At the top of the lobby, you can sort the lobby by Cash games, Sit & Go Tournaments, Scheduled Tournaments, and Blackjack. You'll also find conditional filters at the top of the lobby. To illustrate, if Cash Games are slected you are able to sort by Card Game, Buy-In, and Limit. On the other hand, if Scheduled Tournamnets are chosed, you can filter by tournament type.
The majority of the lobby is taken up by the list of tables. Like most poker rooms, Bovada's main poker lobby is sortable by clicking the top of any column. For example, you can sort tournaments by start time and buy-in. Although this is standard, it is very useful.
Once you've taken a seat, you'll realize you're a number, literally. At Bovada, there are no traditional screen names: everyone is an anonymous number. Love it or hate it, but thats the way it is.
Bavada's poker interface while seated is similar to other rooms. You can chat in the bottom-left corner, view your hand history in the top-left corner, and betting is done in the bottom-center. The hand history at Bavada Poker is rather clunky. If you're used to a slick hand history feature, like PokerStars, you'll be disappointed.
Bovada does provide one unique feature in their hand history system. Unlike other card rooms (who offer only information on a player's own hand), Bovada's hand histories can be made to reveal the hole cards of all the other players at the table. This option can be found in the “Account” area of the software, from which users can request these histories. In order to keep this from compromising the integrity of their games, Bovada has imposed a 24 hour time gap. Players will need to wait a full day before being able to see hole card info on a particular hand.
To sum it up, Bavada's poker software is average. It's nothing special, but it's free from fatal errors, like random crashes and terrible lag, that make some poker room experiences unbearable.
Bovada Poker Action & Players
For the most part, the action on Bovada Poker is good. Games are running around the clock, but game selection tends to decline past midnight.
As far as variety of games go, Bovada is top notch. The room offers a variety of cash games, sit and gos, and tournaments. Texas Hold'Em is the most popular game but Bovada also offers Omaha and 7 Card Stud.
Bovada Poker Fish Rating
The games are about as tough as you can remember from Bodog Poker, since they same the same traffic. If you're not familar with Bodog, Bodog tends to be fishier than normal. One huge problem with fish at Bovada is the anonymous tables - you never know if you're playing the same big whale. This can become pretty annoying.
The level of play in tournaments and SnGs is weak. If you follow a proper typical tournament doctrine, you should be able to make some money.
Bovada Bonus & Promotions
Bovada provides players with a 100% up to $1,000 bonus on their first 2 deposit. For example, if you deposited $400, your bonus account would be credited with $400. Later, if you made a $600 deposit, you will receive $600 more in bonuses. For every 5 poker points, $1 is earned. The bonus is released according to the schedule below.
LEVEL - POKER POINTS - BONUS ISSUED - TOTAL BONUSES
1 - 50 - $10 - $10
2 - 250 - $40 - $50
3 - 750 - $100 - $150
4 - 1500 - $150 - $300
5 - 3000 - $300 - $600
6 - 5000 - $400 - $1000
Players have 60 days to earn the bonus. After 60 days, the bonus expires and can no longer be earned.
Bovada runs seasonal promotions across its poker room, sports book, and casino. Past poker promotions usually happen around major holidays, like Christmas. Typical holiday promotions include festive countdowns which give players a chance to win cash, freeroll entries, or tournament tickets.
Bovada also runs the King of the Felt promotion. To become King of the Felt, you must place in the money in at least 3 Sit and Gos in one week. For every 3 money finishes, Bovada will enter one ticket with your name on it in the weekly drawing. If you win the drawing, you'll have a chance to battle the reigning King and usurp his throne. If you deafeat the current King, $1,000 will be credited to your account. If you win 10 consecutive matches, Bovada will send you to the 2012 WSOP Main Event!
Check out the promotion section on Bovada's website for the lastest poker promotions.

Bovada, the name sounds so much like an expensive watch maker. Ranks number 2 in US traffic the last time I checked. I have received payouts twice this year from Bovada. One took a month and 10 days and the next took 3 weeks to receive. Their maximum single check payout is $3000 and you can receive a minimum payout of $20. One free payout a month, otherwise, you are looking at a $50 fee.

Pony up. My friends cannot believe it that I can bet on the horses while I am playing poker on Bovada. I just go into the software, bet a show on my favorite and go back to my poker. Many times on my vacations people will want to see what horses are racing from different tracks across the U.S.
--
Craps... Yes they have a casino that offers craps. Most poker sites have pulled a casino into their poker site. You still have to purchase chips and cashout chips to and from your casino account. This can be annoying when you want to play slots now, because I usually do not have casino chips laying around. Bovada offers no-download games, so you do not have to download the casino games. This helps when you play at a library or using someones laptop and you cannot download software without getting the evil eye. Jacks or Better and many other slots, blackjack, roulette, video poker and progressives, and Keno are a mouse click away.
--
Poker. That's why I come to Bovada, for the poker. It is easy to get a bankroll started. One of the tournies offered costs 25 player points and the top 15 win a ticket to a $7500 tourney. The other tourney I frequent more often is costs 200 player points and the top 15 win a ticket to a $7500 freeroll. Only a tenth the number of entrants in this one. Bovada is also known to pass out weekly $5K tickets if you bet on NFL. Which leads me into.
--
Sportsbetting. There are many times I compare the juice on Bovada and the odds, and I am offered a better line at Bovada, so this is also a frequent hangout for my sportsbetting. It is refreshing to see
-105 lines when everyone and their mother is sitting at -110.
--
Customer support? Hey, they have a telephone number that you can pick up and talk live. No waiting for four days hoping your email gets answered. Email is available also, which I use when it is not so urgent.
--
I hope you give Bovada a try. I think the stay will be mutually rewarding.

Bovada - A bit fishy is a good thing. on 09 Nov 2012

Play is a little softer than what I'm used to on other sites. They offer sports betting and casino/slots action from their website, so they get a fair amount of recreational gamblers playing poker imho.
Easy to find one or two tables of you favorite game, but sometimes its hard to find more that that. You can only multi-table 4 cash games or 4 SNG, but oddly I think you can play as many MTT as you want.
Anonymous players have been in place for more than a year and for the most part I have gotten used to it. So taking notes on players is useless (oddly they allow you to take notes, but notes disappear when table does). Not sure why they allow chat either, anonymous makes it kind of pointless.
They offer a lot of different SNGs, but the 6 handed and 9 handed 'standard' ones are the only ones that get seated quickly. Tons of other SNGs are left empty of only a couple people sitting and waiting forever.
Gone is the days of huge overlays on their big tournaments. Wasn't uncommon to see 20-30% overlays, but not you are lucky to find one in a blue moon with 5-10% overlay. Late registration is open for 60+ minutes for the big tournaments and 30+ for the smaller ones.
I can't remember the last time they had a re-deposit bonus. They always have odd ball promotions on facebook, twitter that they throw out on a whim every week or so. Usually $10ish satellite tickets, or $5 casino bet.
Haven't deposited in a while, but I think they charge a fee for credit card deposits. You can get one free withdrawal a month and lately it only takes then 2-3 weeks to approve, then you get a 2nd day letter package from FedEx.

Been playing on Bodog a while, Must say I do like the MTT schedule they offer. Its really nice that they offer beginners MTT with a little bigger payoff, as people like arent the sharks so it makes playing more fun, since more people get paid out. The anonymous thing is alright once you get used to it but it does look a little bland just seeing numbers as opposed to names. The worst part of Bovada is the poker tables themselves, while unique, they are just odd. The lobby since being upgraded has a very professional look. I recently deposited and was offered no perks or tickets to anything which was somewhat disappointing but the variety of the MTT schedule makes up for that. SNG are not too active and I dont play much cash game to give a full review of that. But if you enjoy playing MTT's its worthwhile depositing some money on Bovada. Just be aware of the odd looking tables and the bland look to all the players being numbers.

Bovada is basically Bodog, actually no, it is Bodog, just with a different name. Everything is the same, the software, and even the players - yes, traffic is shared with Bodog too. Bovada offers a decent bonus, although it is admittedly hard to clear the whole thing unless you are a full time grinder. The software is where a lot of people seem to find the most problems. Forced anonymous tables, no hand histories, no Poker Tracker/Hold'em Manager, only 4 cash tables at once are just a few of the issues we have found. Not everyone finds these to be a big issue, especially if you just play for fun, but other than that, the software seems slick and easy to use. The action is decent for a US site, although don't expect PokerStars like traffic. Overall Bovada is a good room for US players and we recommend them if you're looking to play!
