Boris Becker
Boris Becker (Born November 22, 1967 in Leimen, Germany) is one of the most well known tennis pros in the world. In fact, his tennis accolades are so many that they are literally too numerous to mention!
His devastating serve, excellent net game, heavy forehand and powerful return of serve made him an unstoppable force on the tennis circuit. He was like a poisonous snake on grass courts, or perhaps even more dangerous; on clay courts he was a little less effective.
In 1985, Becker stunned the world by defeating Kevin Curren in four sets becoming the first unseeded player, the youngest player and also the first German ever to win the very prestigious Wimbledon Grand Slam. He was 17 years 7 months old at the time. Michael Chang has since broken this record by winning the French Open at 17 years 3 months. He would go on to win the Wimbledon again in 1986 and 1989, proving that his win at that young age was definitely not a fluke. Over the course of his career, Becker won a grand total of 49 singles titles and 15 doubles titles.
He spent much of his career near the top of the ATP rankings, and was even briefly ranked at No. 1 for about 12 weeks in 1991. His highest doubles ranking was 7th, achieved in 1986.
But it's not all about tennis for Becker; he has been successful in many businesses and has managed to stay in the spotlight despite retiring from the noble sport. Since 2000, Becker is the principal owner of the tennis division of Völkl Inc., a tennis racquet and clothing manufacturer. He also published an autobiography called "Augenblick, verweile doch..." (English title: The Player) in 2003.
He also agreed to a deal with cell phone carrier Vodafone in an agreement where he would answer select text messages from fans. The deal would include him answering 300 messages per year, mostly friend requests and some trivia about the men’s ATP tour. Becker visited many places while promoting this, including but not limited to Moscow, Nairn, Airdrie and Glasgow.
Becker also launched his own website called BorisBecker.tv, which more than just a blog is actually a form of an online media platform, much like youtube. The sole difference between youtube and BorisBecker.tv is that the only clips shown are his own, from both his career and also footage of his daily life. Pretty ballin'!
During his tennis days, Becker would also play some poker casually. According to him, "it helped me to improve my concentration."
"Now I want to develop my poker skills and challenge myself to become really competitive at the highest levels in poker." If Becker ever becomes half as good at poker than he was at tennis, it would be a truly scary thing to behold... and Becker has shown signs that this will indeed be the case.
Becker is routinely seen playing in EPT events. In the 2009 EPT Prague Open Becker finished in 32nd place for a relatively modest $1,689 and in the massive buy-in 2009 Five Star World Poker Classic Becker finished in 40th place for a $40,855 payday. Back in '04, he did bag a $22 online tourney for a payday of close to $2,000, which means he knows how victory tastes like and therefore it is just a matter of time before he wins a much larger buy-in tourney.
Becker has also shown an affinity to participate in charity events, which means helping the needy is high on his priorities list. He has participated in the Ante up for Africa event of Don Cheadle and Annie Duke and will also be participating in the upcoming amFar charity event held during the 2010 PokerStars Caribbean Adventure, event which will give away half of its prize pool towards AIDS research.
Becker is and will forever remain larger than life, and especially so in his native home country of Germany. You do know and understand that on a tennis court you probably do not stand half a chance versus Boris, but you can try your luck versus him on a PokerStars table; just keep on the lookout for his super secret and impossible to guess username 'Boris Becker'.
