Weekend Tournament Wrap-Up
posted on 5 January 2011 by

The 2011 online tournament scene started off with a bang this past Sunday. A lot of players must have found their stocking stuffed a little bit more this past holiday season as attendance was up across the board. One of the biggest jumps was seen in the $215 buy-in Sunday Warm-Up which saw more than 5,000 players enter the day’s earliest event.  The Warm-Up’s prize pool hit the $1,000,000 mark for the first time in a long while and provides a lot of hope for online events throughout the new year. There was not a whole lot of suspense at the Warm-Up final table as “7de9″ took a large chip-lead, but agreed upon a chip-chop. With just $10,000 left on the table the rail was left wanting more. In the end 7de9′s chiplead proved to be too much as he took down the Warm-Up title and a nice $138,295 payday.

The Sunday Million again saw a rise in its prize pool as it came close to the $1,900,000 mark before falling just short. Still, there was more than $270,00 on the line for the winner.  Interestingly enough the Million was one of a few tournaments that was not chopped this past weekend as “he77_Razor” went against the grain and took down “stevemruk” for the title. The $270,354 cash was by far and away the biggest score of his career.  Runner-up stevemruk earned $198,786 for a hard days work, also the biggest score of his career. While two relatively unknown players make huge scores, it was the most experienced of the bunch, “brianm15″, who busted first at the final table in 9th place. The Sunday500 final table was once again chalk full of big names with impressive tournament resumes.  The tournament came down to a chop between “KJulius10″ and Yorane “viirusss” Kerignard.  The highly-ranked KJulius10 earned himself the biggest piece of the pie as his chip stack was much larger at the time of the chop. The $86,995 score was the 4th biggest of his career well behind a win in FTOPS Event #22 for $159,243 and a 2nd place finish in the $1M on FullTilt for $163,222. Runner-up Kerignard’s $78,500 cash bolstered a resume that includes wins in the Super Tuesday and $100k Guaranteed on PokerStars.

The Sunday $215r came back from a poor showing last week to easily eclipse its $150,000 guarantee this past Sunday. With more than 260 of the best online tournament players in the world on hand there were plenty of studs at the final table.  9th place finisher Fabrizio ‘SixthSenSe19″ Gonzalez is a top-50 ranked tournament professional who won WCOOP Event #38 earlier this year for $120,000.  “Dr_Olson”, one of the world’s best high-stakes fixed-limit pros finished in 7th place for just $6,566. The nosebleed Limit player has earned nearly $1,000,000 on PokerStars playing mainly $200/$400 Limit.  Eventual winner “jus2awsum” is best known for winning FTOPS Event #3 in 2010 for $76,545. He also has wins in the $1k Monday on FullTilt and the $100k Guaranteed on Absolute Poker. The $38,458 score comes in as just the 6th best finish of his career.

Wrapping up the first Sunday of 2011 on PokerStars was the $250,000 Guaranteed Second Chance. The late starting event attracted more than 1,500 players creating a $305,600.  Unfortunately the final four players let the air out of the final table’s tires as they decided upon a chip-chop guaranteeing everyone at least $31,000.  The biggest piece of the pie went to 3rd place finisher “shimmyzo” who earned more than $43,700 after the chop.  The five-figure score appears to be the first of his career.  Taking home the title was “F.Briatore” who is no stranger to big wins on PokerStars having shipped WCOOP Event #8 back in 2006 for a $79,112 payday.

Much like PokerStars, FullTilt also saw a nice uptick in attendance this past weekend as prize pools were up in the Brawl, $750k, and Mulligan.  The first major of the day, the $400k Brawl, is a knock-out style tournament. Every player buys-in for $240+$16 and $40 goes to the knock-out pool. Throughout the event, if you eliminate some one you earn their $40 bounty. Players who make it all the way to the final table typically earn $200-$400 in bounties through out the event.  There were more than 30 FullTilt pros on hand in the Brawl including former POY Allen Cunningham, Andrew “muddywater” Wiggins, Brandon Adams, and David “the Dragon” Pham. Caio Pimenta took low-pro honors finishing in 93rd place. The Brawl also fell to the chip-chop bug as runner-up “Docdog1″ actually earned $19,686 than winner “neker2013″.  The six-figure score was the first of his career.

The $750k Guaranteed gave the Warm-Up on Stars a run for its money for the day’s 2nd biggest event. The $216 buy-in major fell just short as 4,556 players created a $911,200 prize pool.  Nearly 50 FullTilt sponsored professionals participated in the $750k including Matt “Hoss_TBF” Hawrilenko, Scott Fischman, Huck Seed, and Isaac “Menlo” Baron.  Matt Jarvis made a deep run before busting in 77th place for $1,321.  Much like nearly every other major on Sunday the $750k was chopped. Andras Nemeth and Craig “mcc3991″ McCorkell agreed upon a chip-chop paying out $119,338 and $133,939 respectively.  Both players had seen solid success on FullTilt and PokerStars in the past, but these scores easily rank as the best of their careers.

It was only fitting that the day’s final event, the $200k Mulligan on FullTilt, came down to a chip-chop much like every other tournament. This obviously wasn’t the best way to start 2011 but much like in all forms of poker, this appears to be just a little bit of variance.  The late starting major had a strong showing with 1,341 players creating a $268,200 prize pool.  Just over 20 FullTilt “red pros” entered the Mulligan including Scott Clements, Michael Mizrachi, and Jeff Madsen.  Unfortunately none of the professionals could muster up enough chips to make the top-100. The final table chop included three players, “SonnyBlack87″, “Anthonyyy_Kimmm”, and “mamacool”. All three earned at least $38,000 for a hard days work.
