Poker is a game played by not just professionals but by all types. From rich to poor to ordinary to famous. Speaking of the famous, it looks like a lot of them are about to be in trouble. In particular Tobey Maguire is one amongst more than a dozen being sued over a multi-million dollar illegal poker game.
There is an illegal gambling ring that ran high stakes poker games underground with Maquire and other celebrities that are being sued over. Overall, Maguire has won more than $300,000 from a hedge fund manager who needed to pay off a huge debt. The man is said to be Brad Ruderman who has lost $25 million over investor money in clandestine poker games. The investors are seeking Maguire’s money as his winnings actually came from their money.
Some other famous names being sued are Gabe Kaplan, Rick Salomon, Cody Leibel, Nick Cassavetes and Alex Gores. Leonardo DiCaprio, Ben Affleck and Matt Damon played in the games but are currently not being sued.
Maguire has said to have won as much as $1 million each month over three years. This obviously means he could have been racking up around $40 million just from these games.
To get into the games, celebrities had to tell security guard secret passwords. Once inside, the players played with high wads of cash on the tables with professional dealers.
The ringleader is now said to be Molly Bloom. Bloom is the sibling of Olympic skier and Philadelphia Eagles player, Jeremy Bloom. She is known to have “model looks and friends in high places” which led to games’ attractiveness.
The story is still in the early stages. Make sure to keep up with the news for more details.
