Nevada Governor Brian Sandoval has announced plans to revive his state’s Gambling Policy Committee. This group of eleven individuals will, according to iGaming Business, help “to advise regulators and legislators on how the western state can maintain its edge as a leader of gaming regulatory policy.”
Originally founded in 1961, the first Gambling Policy Committee emerged as the brainchild of the Nevada Legislature. Though the group has exerted a strong influence on the policies of Las Vegas and its sister cities, the full compliment has not met since the 1980′s. Governor Sandoval has extensive experience with the Committee, including a 27-month stretch as its chairman in the early 2000′s.
“We will preserve our position as the gold standard in gaming regulation,” said Sandoval, a Republican, “and in the provision of gaming entertainment. We will be second to none on the globe… I hope to sketch a new road map for the journey ahead.”
While this decision will have no immediate effect on the state of online gaming in Nevada, it does open up a forum for future discussions regarding the potential legalization of online poker. Of all the states in the union, Sandoval’s is the most likely to move forward into this new market. And the governor, for his part, is bullish on the role of technology in his state’s gambling industry.
“We can only imagine what technology will bring in another ten years and there are policy implications for us in that world of rapid change,” he said. “We will examine issues ranging from specific technological devices to the world of the Internet to the impact we may someday see on our tax policy from an infrastructure in a changed cybereconomy in which gamers will not necessarily need to be on the casino floor.”
