In May Harrah’s unprecedented decision to postpone the final table of the World Series by four months sent shock waves through the poker community. Over time the voices of derision have faded away, but they have been replaced by a mumbles of bemused un-interest. The lack of any recognizable face at the final table has resulted in a distinct lack of interest in the alliteratively monikered November Nine. Most poker fans still clueless as to who will actually be competing for the $9.1 million prize when the final table resumes.

The man many consider to be in with the best chance of capturing the bracelet is Dennis Phillips, the current chip leader with 26,295,000, has now become the first final table player to officially announce that he is seeking professional coaching. Teaming up with Roy ‘The Oracle’ Winston’s Oracle Consulting Firm in a move that Phillips hopes will boost his profile as much as his game.

Roy, and his compatriot Joe McGowan, claim to have been closely scrutinizing the final rounds of play in this years main event and have collated detailed information on the final nine players. This, along with their top flight poker experience, is what Phillips hopes will give him that all important edge over his opponents. Phillips has enjoyed success in and around his hometown of St. Louis and has obvious confidence in his abilities:

“I look forward to working with Roy & Joe and Oracle Poker Consulting over the next couple of months leading up to the Main Event. I’m confident in my game and don’t intend to change it, but I’m also smart enough to know that you can always learn more. Roy and Joe’s help and insight will be invaluable, not only in preparing for the final table but in helping me navigate through the many aspects of being in the poker spotlight.”

Winston has only been a regular poker player since 2006, but has already amassed up an impressive tournament CV. Most notably his first place finish at the 2007 WPT Borgata Poker Open. The $1.6 million prize contributing a large chunk to his $2.2 million overall tournament winnings. He has also demonstrated this business acumen, with a number of Oracle’s anonymous clients reportedly having good runs in this years WSOP. Aside from being a commercial pilot and former medical doctor, Winston is also the CEO and founder of LaserAway a cosmetics company that offers a number of laser-based treatments.

Oracle Consulting’s second coach, pro Joe McGowan, may be the lesser known of the two but were it not for him Winston claims that his meteoric rise into the world of professional poker might never have taken place. The two met in a Californian casino while McGowan was a local golf pro and businessman. Winston claims that Joe “took me under his wing” and before long the pair were challenging bigger and bigger games. McGowan continues to be successful in high stakes cash games and his vaunted poker expertise will no doubt be invaluable to Dennis Phillips.

Although no other member of the November Nine have formally declared a coach, it is unlikely that many of them will reach the final table without seeking some form of professional advice. Time will tell if Phillip’s decision to recruit Oracle Consulting will reap rewards when the final table reconvenes at the Rio on November 9th.

The online poker spotlight turns to PokerStars this weekend for the highly anticipated World Championship of Online Poker. The event is set to begin tomorrow, Friday September 4th, starting at 14:30 EST with a $215 buyin NL Hold’em 6-max tournament with a $1 million guarantee. The series features 33 events with a combined $30 million in guarantees, making this year’s WCOOP the biggest online tournament series yet.

The schedule this year features several new games that were not found in last year’s lineup. These include a NL Hold’em 4-max event, a Mixed Hold’em 6-max tournament, a NL 2-7 Single Draw tournament, and an 8-game Mixed Event that should prove very interesting. There are also some high buyin tournaments that should attract a good bit of attention. Two events with a $10,300 buyin are offered this year — Event #5, a High Roller NL Hold’em tournament with a $2 million guaranteed, and Event #32, a HORSE tournament with a $1.6 million guarantee. The highest buyin on the schedule is sure to be a fan favorite. Event #19 is a NL Hold’em Heads Up tourney sporting a hefty $25,500 buyin and a $1.6 million guaranteed prize pool.

Sundays are highlighted by NL Hold’em tournaments with big guarantees. In a somewhat surprising move, PokerStars has made these tournaments into 2-day events, with play continuing into Mondays. This decision caused a bit of a stir in the online poker community, with many players voicing their opinion that the 2-day events should run Saturday/Sunday rather than Sunday/Monday.

Stars is also offering 2nd Chance tournaments for each event this year. These are tournaments that start a few hours after their corresponding event. They have a slightly smaller buyin and offer you another shot at your chosen game if you happen to be among the unfortunates that bust out early in the WCOOP events.

WCOOP comes to a close with the Main Event on Sunday September 21st. This year’s ME is also a 2-day event, $5,300 buyin No Limit Hold’em tournament with a record $10 million guaranteed prize pool. The payouts for winning the Main Event have been steadily increasing year to year with the increase in the prize pools. In 2006, pro player J.c. Tran took down the top spot for $650,000. Last year’s Main Event had 2,998 entries and a prize pool just shy of $7.5 million. The winner, “Ka$ino”, took away $1,378,330 for his efforts. The top prize for the winner this year may approach $2 million.

The magazine most often perused in casinos around the continent, Bluff Europe, has today announced the winner of it’s ‘European Poker Capital 2008′ award. Last year the prize went to London, propelled to the top of the list by hosting the inaugural WSOPE, with Dublin finishing in the runners up spot. This year however the roles were reversed, as the capital of Ireland was also crowned the capital of European poker.

Receiving honorable mention were a trio of other poker hotspots located on mainland Europe. Vienna, Amsterdam and Barcelona were listed as some of the most promising up and coming poker-cities in the world. Already well travelled by the tourist crowd, poker players may now have an even better excuse to visit some of the continents finest cultural hotspots.

Dublin itself was hailed for the “lively and friendly” atmosphere which pervades it’s cardrooms and poker clubs. A swathe of poker establishments, both large and small, can be found all around the city - with societies and pub leagues catering to even the most casual player.

Those on the prowl for some bigger stakes always eagerly await the arrival of the Irish Poker Open - Europe’s most prestigious tournament - held in Dublin since it’s inception in 1981. This years event attracted big names such as Todd and Doyle Brunson and was won by English pro Neil Channing, who took home €801,400.

One of Irish poker’s most revered ambassadors is Liam ‘The Gentleman’ Flood, renowned for his part in bringing Texas Hold ‘em to Europe was asked for his thoughts on the award. The winner of the Party Poker European Open 2007 was delighted to hear of Bluff magazine’s verdict, and echoed the sentiments of the judging panel:

“There’s a sense of community. We find that a few drinks after the game helps you relax, too.”

All in all in, if you’re looking for a poker break, away from the bright lights of Las Vegas, it seems that Dublin should be top of your list.

Another exciting Sunday for many as poker’s elite online players battled it out over $5,000,000 in guaranteed prize money.

Getting the day going was the PokerStars Sunday Warm-up. The $200+15 buy-in event is always stock-piled with some of Europe’s best poker talent. 2007 WSOPE Main Event Champion Annette “Annette_15″ Oberstad made the Final table but would bust in 6th. Annette is extremely well-known across the online poker scene, and reached legendary status after winning a 180-man event with out ever looking at her cards. 19 year-old Canadian Alex “AWice” Wice was able to out battle another High-Stakes MTT player lrdvoldemort for first and $135,000 in prize money. Even though the tournament was a special “2x” event, after 3627 entries and 1322 rebuys the $1,000,000 guarantee was still not met forcing just over $10,000 in overlay.

1. AWice $135,000.00
2. lrdvoldemort $95,000.00
3. Rivvie $65,000.00
4. Bookie1978 $51,500.00
5. halt81 $41,000.00
6. Annette_15 $31,000.00
7. allinstevie $21,000.00
8. mppowerm $13,000.00
9. MrTile $9,000.00

The PokerStars Sunday Million once again generated the largest prizepool of the weekend, however, it too failed to reach it’s guarantee of $1,500,000. Only 7212 players entered forcing PokerStars to provide over $57,000 in overlay. In the end”diegoaiz” was able to take down the title and over $148,000 in prize money after a chip-chop. The most notable player at the final table had to be “CodeRedRulez” better known as “ElipsesJeff” on www.flopturnriver.com’s forums. His appearance would be short lived however after taking two brutal beats to start the final table. Jeff’s KK was no good against TT and his AK fell short against an opponent’ Q2. Still, a $10,500 payday is a nice way to start your labor day weekend. High-stakes Cash and MTT-Pro Gabe “gp333″ Patgorski made a deep run but too fell short, finishing 59th for just $2,250 in earnings. Tma420 and pbdrunks also made deep runs but busted in 22nd and 13th place respectively.

1. diegoaiz $148,848.49
2. TheRodGuy $127,912.72
3. FlopeDeNuts $116,687.79
4. IamUnlucky $69,000.00

The FullTilt $750k also fell well-short of it’s guarantee, only having 3,225 in the $200+$15 buy-in tournament. Taking home the title and over $132,000 in prize money was player “Steveee111″. This was by far and away his largest tournament cash, having bested his previous mark of $535 in a 54-man $6 SNG. “Flip This Cup” would take a brutal beat and finsih 3rd when his QQ fell victim to K7s on a Q 8 9 5 6 board. $50,000+ in winnings will help to ease the pain. FullTilt’s Jordan Morgan made the deepest run of all the Red Pro’s finishing a respectable 21st. Berry Johnston, Ryan Daut, Roy Winston, and Huck Seed also finished in the top 522 and made the money.

This was barely his largest win ever, edging out the $71,242 he made finishing second to Annette_15 in a FullTilt $500k event last year. “I CaioPimenta I” finished off a solidmonth with a second place finish and over $45,000. Earlier this month he won a $75 buy-in tournament for over $11,600.

PokerStars $500+$30 $500,000 guarantee is a tournament typically reserved for the high-stakes MTT crowd. This week, 998 players vied for 1st place and $91,250 in prize money. “Titantom32″ was fortunate enough to take home the crown after agreeing to a 2-way chop. Notable high-stakes MTT player “FishOnTilt” once again makes our Sunday Report finishing 5th for over $26,000. Se7enTr3y, who had final tabled the Sunday Warmup earlier in the year, finsihed 7th for over $16,000. MrSmokey1, SBRounder, jcamby33, and BeL0WaB0Ve all made the final two tables but were unable to reach the final table. All four are well-known high-stakes MTT players and could have created one of the more memorable final tables in recent history. Chris “Moorman1″ Moorman finished 3rd. He is widely considered one of the best, if not the best, online MTT player around. He has won the PocketFives triple crown along with the $1k Monday on FullTilt earlier this year.

PokerStars $200+$15 rebuy event was taken down by Shane “Shaniac” Schleger. Outlasting “twirlpro” and notable high-stakes player “SirWatts” he earned over $51,000 for the victory. This was Shane’s biggest online score to date, having already had multiple $30,000+ cashed in $100 rebuy events. Mike “SirWatts” Watson’s $21,250 payday pales in comparison to the $1,673,770 he earned after winning the Bellagio Cup IV Deep Stack Main Event this past July.

The $100+9 rebuy tournament on PokerStars had a familiar face at this final table, as 3rd place finisher from the $500k guarantee, “Moorman1″, made an appearance. However his Final Table run would be short lived, as he would bow out 9th, earning just over $5,000. The online MTT community thanks Chris for allowing some other players a chance to earn some real money. Taking first place and over $68,000 was “fateileoni”, who, as you could probably tell from his name, is an Italian-born player. This win is a big improvement over his largest previously-recorded cash of $6200 in another $100 rebuy event.

1. fateileoni $68,006.25
2. D.J.777 $48,964.50

PokerStars Sunday Second Chance always gives one last opportunity to those who have busted out early in other events or to those needing another Sunday “rush”. “freezeplay” would make the most of this “chance” earning the victory and over $54,000 in 1st place prize money. “Freezeplay” has been off the tournament scene for a while, having made some large cahsed back in early 2007 but having nothing recorded again until now. He had made a few deep runs in the Nightly $100k on Stars last year, finishing 2nd and 3rd. Well-known mid-stakes cash and MTT player “Patonius2000″ was able to grab 3rd and a nice pay day of $30,000.

1. freezeplay (Canada) $54,480.00

FullTilt’s Sunday Mulligan, much like Stars Second Chance, attracts those looking for one last big score. The $200+$15, $150k Guarantee event drew 966 entrants. In the end a large group of virtual unknowns vied for 1st and over $44,000 in prize money. “Shortmat1444″ would outlast “Pokerccini” for the victory. Not to be confused with High-Stakes MTT pro Dustin Dirksen, James “flushy” Dempsey, finished 6th.

1. Shortmat1444 - $44,436

As always, the Bodog $100k Guarantee produced a massive overlay. This week only 558 players competed, meaning over $44,000 was up for grabs. Making the final table was “rusostreet”, last weeks PokerStars Second Chance winner. He would fall short this time, finishing 5th for $5,500. “Dahotshot” took home the win and $25,000, falling just short of his biggest win ever, a 2nd place finish in UB’s $200k guarantte for $26,500 earlier in the year.

Last night the first 2 episodes of the 2008 World Series of Poker Main Event were aired on ESPN and ESPN HD. All of the world’s best poker players were on hand for the 39th playing of the $10,000 buy-in event. Because of the recent popularity of poker the Main Event has been split into multiple starting days. Four days (1A, 1B, 1C, 1D) are used to whittle down the field at the Rio Poker Room in Las Vegas, NV.

The Main Event’s roots can be traced back to 1949 when Benny Binion (of the legendary Binion’s Casino) staged a variety of events in search of the world’s best poker player. Eventual winner Johnny Moss is said to have won over two-million dollars during a five-month span against no other than “Nick the Greek” Dandolos. In 1970 the “Main Event” was formed and once again, it was Johnny Moss who would take down the title. 2007 Champion Jerry Yang will try to join Moss, Doyle Brunson, Stu Ungar, and Johnny Chan as the only multipe winners of the Main Event.

Key notables in last night episodes were 2008 bracelet winners Daniel Negreanu, Erick Lindgren, and Jason Young. Lindgren has been on quite a tear this year having won the Mixed-Hold’em Event and placing 3rd in the $50,000 Chip Reese HORSE Tournament. Daniel Negreanu, a close friend of Lindgren and team PokerStars member, won his title in the $2,000 LHE Event.

Two one-hour-long episodes are set to air every Tuesday night on ESPN and ESPN HD from September 9th through October 28th starting at 9PM EST. The final table, otherwise known as “The November Nine”, has already been set. For the first time in history the FT will be shown live, on Novermber 11th. Once the final two players are left, they will once again be shown playing live the next day, November 12th.

The final table results are as follows:
1. Yevgeniy Timoshenko $500,000
2. Joon Hee Yea $250,000

Macau is the second leg of this year’s Asian Poker Tour. It took place at the StarWorld Hotel and Casino in Macau, China, over the days of August 27th through August 31st. The buy-in started at $5,300 and many poker sharks made their appearance, such as John Juanda and Chris Parker. Doyle Brunson even cut the ribbon to kick off the event.

Two more legs make up the rest of the 2008 APT, Seoul and Singapore. The Philippines kicked off the tour. The dates are yet to be announced. Next year, the APT plans to expand, having a minimum of six events to make up the tour.

If you are running hot right now, head on over to Titan Poker and play some sit-n-go tournaments. Since 2005, Titan has been running special jackpot sit-n-gos, which are growing in popularity every day. Since they were started, over $7,000,000 has been awarded! “This shows that Titan Poker’s jackpot tournaments are very popular and are continuing to grow at a fast rate,” manager Robin Steele commented.

To win the Fort Knox Jackpot, you must win six 6-max sit-n-gos in a row. The jackpot starts at $50,000, but if it is not won by the end of each week, it grows until it hits $200,000! If you find it difficult to win 1st place 6 times consecutively, but you’re able to place 1st OR 2nd 6 times consecutively, you will be awarded $750 instead.

There are also Rio and Maui Progressive Jackpots, both starting with smaller starting jackpots. Like the Fort Knox jackpot, they grow each week if they are not claimed by a player winning consecutive sit-n-go tournaments.

If sit-n-go tournaments aren’t your thing and you’re looking for a chance at a huge multi-table tournament score, get ready for the first weekend of this coming September. That is when the highly anticipated $2.5 million guaranteed tournament on the iPoker network takes place, with a $1500+$80 buyin (good deal for those looking to pay less rake). The first prize will be around $500,000. There are plenty of satellite available on Titan Poker right now, so be sure to hurry over if you want a piece of the action!

1. Balla686 - 2304 pts
2. vinnyb9 - 1839 pts
3. Panicked - 1792 pts

Congratulations to Balla686 for winning the weekly race and the chance to play a Bodog pro heads-up for $1,000. He moved up from 4th to 1st in the last few days of the week, taking the top spot away from Panicked. Vinnyb9 was in 3rd when I wrote last Friday and moved up to finish in 2nd by the time the week was over.

Now for some current standings - here is this week’s top ten so far:

1. michaeleahci - 2035 pts
2. manderbutt - 1094 pts
3. ParliGod - 939 pts
4. andyvanslyke - 933 pts
5. Swany420 - 844 pts
6. WillyNilly - 835 pts
7. bigShelton - 790 pts
8. whatever877 - 789 pts
9. scarface0928 - 764 pts
10. RayRay26 - 763 pts

Michaeleahci has a huge lead with 2035 points, almost 1,000 points ahead of 2nd place manderbutt. This is by far the largest lead I have seen since I started covering the Bodog leaderboards - it’s hard to imagine that anyone will be able to overcome it in the last few days of this week. We can’t rule it out completely, however, especially with so many good players in the top ten right now. ParliGod is more than capable of stringing together a few good tournament finishes, as is andyvanslyke, who won a weekly leaderboard this year back in April.

Now for what you’ve been waiting for: some updated monthly standings for August!

1. manderbutt - 4324 pts
2. vinnyb9 - 4281 pts
3. thatsNice - 3965 pts
4. Panicked - 3937 pts
5. gotzballz - 3861 pts
6. ParliGod - 3709 pts
7. whatever877 - 3700 pts
8. WillyNilly - 3485 pts
9. Troy111 - 3432 pts
10. cusee - 3410 pts

The names in the top ten haven’t changed all that much, but the order of the names has. Manderbutt was in 3rd place last week with 3781 points, but after a great past week of tournaments, he has shot up to 1st place and 4324 points. Vinnyb9 kept 2nd place, and thatsNice, last week’s 1st place, dropped down to 3rd place with 3965 points. The only new addition to the top ten this week is that of cusee; he moved up from last week’s 13th to this week’s 10th. So now the question is, what will the standings look like a couple days from now when August is over? Manderbutt is in the lead right now, but his lead is slim as vinnyb9 is less than 50 points behind him. In fact, less than 100 points separates 1st place from 10th, so anyone in the top ten could potentially move into 1st.

Be sure to come back next week to see who ends up winning it all for August! We are very close to the end of the month, so today we’ll be taking a look at how the races are shaping up as they come down to the home stretch.

Current August 30th Top Ten MTT Leaders

1 The Yid 10611.50
2 DimJarnaby35 8969.40
3 daisyxoxo 7675.90
4 Garbonzo24 7674.90
5 sprstoner 7071.30
6 creig 7017.40
7 JMaster130 6834.60
8 athlete2258 6345.80
9 okstate345 6314.50
10 JUMP PUTT 6305.50

Not much movement in the MTT Top Ten this week. The Yid maintains his lead over DimJarnaby35, although the distance between the two has closed slightly since last week. Daisyxoxo still holds third, and will need a big score tonight or tomorrow to take over top spot.

Sprstoner did manage to move up from 7th to 5th this week. He scored $8,778 for a 2nd place finish in the $216 buyin turbo 30K guaranteed on Wednesday. JMaster130 was another mover this week, coming from just off the top ten last week to snag 7th spot this week. He put in some serious volume and had several smaller 4-figure scores.

Speaking of volume, JUMP PUTT cracked the top ten this week with an insane effort. I counted 56 tournaments that he played just on Friday of this week. That, my friends, is a true last ditch effort — hats off to him.

Current August 30th Top Ten SNG Leaders - High Limit

1 adb235 30933.80
2 moneyinthebank1 27671.40
3 PokerToronto 24546.00
4 Whitesnake1 23968.60
5 beanmo 20829.20
6 culaopho 19398.20
7 The Fiend 34 18775.50
8 jdpc27 13615.90
9 gifted08 12065.00
10 locks18 11248.90

Not a whole lot of movement in the High Limit SNG leaderboard, either. Adb235 still holds the lead, although moneyinthebank1 has closed slightly since last week. He will have to have a monster couple of days to close that gap, however.

PokerToronto and beanmo both jumped a couple spots with solid weeks, but their time is running out to push for top spot. The Fiend34 had an off week, picking up very few points and dropped from 5th to 7th going into the final couple days.

A new face shows up toward the end here, with gifted08 cracking the top 10. Locks18 holds his 10th spot as PSCPRODIGY drops off the leaderboard to #12 this week.

Current August 30th Top Ten SNG Leaders - Low Limit

1 Peristeria 16469.70
2 blankchocolate 13285.90
3 einsammy 13004.60
4 DeepComputer 13000.10
5 kjh8448 10245.20
6 ObvFish 9721.30
7 timo82samuel 9189.60
8 LDCrayne 8764.40
9 acidcracker 8544.70
10 ecued 8308.40

The Low Limit SNG Leaderboard shows a litte more action this week. Peristeria holds on to the number one spot. DeepComputer, who was #2 last week, falls to 4th this week having only scored 4 points for the week. Vacation will get you in the leaderboard competition.

DeepComputer’s absence (or lack of results?) also allowed einsammy to keep the #3 spot, despite a not so impressive week of only 740 points. Kjh8448 put in some good numbers to move up from 8th to 5th, although it seems doubtful at this time that he can make a run at the top spot with only two days left.

Looks like Peristeria has this month locked up, we will see in a couple days.

While I’ve started this reporting as a weekly thing coming out every Saturday, I believe I will do a brief report on the winners once the month is out. So look here for that report early next week. Also coming up next week, I’ve got a lead on a new Full Tilt “red pro” leaderboard that will be very interesting, to say the least. Stay tuned!
