Brandon Cantu Wins WSOP Event #48, PLO Hi/Low Split

Brandon Cantu Wins WSOP Event #48, PLO Hi/Low Split

Posted on 29 June 2009 at 7:42 am EDT by allabout | Permalink

Brandon Cantu, a.k.a. “any2cantu”, had a chance to win his second WSOP bracelet last week in Event #39, but came up just short, settling for second place.  He admitted that he took the loss very hard, but fortunately for him, he did not have to wait long for redemption.

This time, while playing Pot-Limit Omaha Hi-Low, 8 or better split, Cantu rode a hot string of cards during day 2 to build up a very large stack.  At one point during day 2, Cantu had reached 1 million in chips before anyone else had reached 300,000.

He entered the final table with double the stack of his nearest competitor.  The final table was no cake walk, however, as Lee Watkinson would put pressure on Cantu, and actually have the chip lead as the two went to heads-up play.  Cantu was able to battle back from a 5 -to-1 chip deficit, though, to eventually take the lead and put Watkinson away.  This is Brandon’s second WSOP bracelet, the first being in the 2006 WSOP, Event #2 - No-Limit Hold’em.

1st - Brandon Cantu - $228,867

2nd - Lee Watkinson - $141,873

3rd - Mathieu Jacqmin - $92,946

4th - Ted Weinstock - $64,727

5th - Tommy Vedes - $47,617

6th - Steve Jelinek - $36,893

7th - Aaron Sias - $30,028

8th - Ronnie Hofman - $25,618

9th - William Mcmahon - $22,862
