Imagine yourself sitting at a crowded poker table, blinded down to your last few chips, all-in on a near unbeatable hand. “Two more,” you think, “two more double-ups and I’ll be back to even.”

Then, on the the river, your opponent nails a two-outer to take all your chips. As you watch, your stack is absorbed by a stranger.

There is no worse feeling in the game of poker.

It’s happened to all of us at one point or another. Heck, even Phil Ivey went bust several times before hitting his stride. Rather than beating yourself up over it, take your bust-out as an opportunity to learn. But before you leap right back into the action, take a few minutes to consider how you want your comeback to go down. Will you make the same mistakes you did the first time around?

1: Time out!

Don’t buy back in immediately with hopes of getting even. I can just about guarantee you that you’ll be throwing your money away. And even if you don’t lose your entire rebuy, you almost certainly won’t come out ahead. Slow down, step back, and reevaluate.

2: Retrace your steps.

Consider how you lost your money. If you’ve just flushed your entire bankroll in a single hand, then a lot of things must have gone wrong. First, the very nature of your loss means that you had every last penny with you at the table. How did that happen? Were you merely at too big of a table, and in over your head? Or were you on the tail end of an atrocious losing streak, before finally selling the farm?

One way or the other, you made a cardinal mistake. In the first case, you neglected to give yourself any outs. If you can afford it, never take your entire bankroll with you to a single table. You’ll be anxious and play apprehensively – in other words, asking to get beat.

If you’re in the second situation mentioned above, then you’re probably long past Mike Caro’s famous “Threshold of Misery”, where all of the losses have begun to run together until you just don’t care. This is a tragic situation, one that most poker players have encountered in their careers. How can you cross back over to the winning side?

3: Consider your cash

When the time comes to reload your bankroll, take a moment for some careful self inspection. Before blindly typing in a starting amount, you need to be sure that you can afford to lose the money you’re laying down. That’s right, you must prepare yourself to lose before even consider a return to the tables!

Is this fatalistic thinking? Absolutely not. By only starting with money that you can actually afford to lose, you’ll remove several of the tensions which would otherwise cripple your game. You’ll be able to enter games more freely, with a more relaxed attitude. Rather than panicking each time you take a minor hit, you’ll be able to maintain an even keel. When you’re winnings grow, you’ll have a greater sense of accomplishment, as well.

4: The Ghost of Bankrolls Past

History is history. Money that you lost is gone. If you just busted out with a $100 bankroll, don’t let yourself be consumed by the desire to instantly win at all back with your current $100. That instant double-up mentality will get you playing bad hands in bad situations. You’ll lose everything, and feel even worse.

Now if you do, after a period of hard work and smart play, win back enough to cover your initial losses, it may not be a bad idea to cash it out. It’ll be one more mental monkey off your back, and the sense of accomplishment will remind you that smart play pays off.

In closing, remember that there are no perfect poker players. Everyone who is truly serious about the game will occasionally go through a losing stretch. Don’t let it get you down. Get back into the game, and use your fresh start as a chance to practice some new-found discipline!

A group of six armed robbers halted play this morning at the 2010 PokerStars.net EPT event in Berlin. The break in occurred around 2:30 PM local time inside the city’s Grand Hyatt Hotel.

While no one was seriously injured in the ensuing panic, it is unclear as to how much cash the criminals managed to escape with. They are said to have been wearing black ski masks and winter coats, and are rumored to have wielded everything from guns to knives to machetes.

What is certain is this: for nearly half an hour, mass panic gripped the EPT poker room. Tables were overturned, scattering chips in an attempt to form makeshift barricades. Members of the media barred the doors to their suite upon glimpsing one of the assailants as he sprinted toward them. Security guards wrestled with the robbers, but it is unknown as to whether any of them were apprehended.

A video of the incident has leaked onto Youtube. Click here to watch.

UPDATE – Another Youtube video showing the security guards and the robbers.

According to both the above clip and an account from PokerNews.com, the panic ensued when a group of tournament personalities burst into the playing hall and began shouting in German. While not everyone present could comprehend exactly what was being said, the actions of those who understood quickly set the tone for the crowd.

Poker Stars has released a statement regarding the event:

“An armed robbery by six men took place today at EPT Berlin. Nobody was seriously injured. We hope to re-start all events at 4pm local time. A police investigation is underway. If you have video footage or photographs that could help the police, please contact the EPT organizers as soon as possible.”

Due to the tenuous circumstances, players in the both the €1,000 side event and the ladies event have been offered a refund. The €1,000 side game has been canceled outright, while the women’s tournament continues to hang in the balance.

Main event play is set to resume around 5 PM local time.

Well, Everest Poker has teamed with Volvo to give players just such a chance. In one of Germany’s most exciting live poker events, card lovers from across the globe will be treated to a weekend of skiing, snowboarding, archery, and of course, one of the most unique poker experiences in the history of the game.

On the weekend of March 19-21, the mountains of Salzburg, Austria on the Kitzsteinhorn will play host to the Everest Poker Volvo Ice Camp. Lucky players will be granted a seat in the Everest Igloo, at a final table sitting around 2,500 meters above sea-level!

In order to qualify for this amazing experience, players must visit the “Scheduled Tournaments” tab in the Everest Software. There, in the “Private” area, you’ll find the Qualifier fürs Volvo Ice Camp, to be held on March 7 at 19:00 GMT.

The game of choice will be No Limit Texas Hold’em, with starting stacks of 2,000 chips. Blinds start at 5/10 and will be jacked up every 10 minutes. Tables are slated to host groups of 10 players, all of whom must buy in for $1.

Another qualifier will be held on March 11 at the same time, 19:00 GMT. Players will once again be treated to ten-seat action with a $1 buy in, featuring No Limit Texas Hold’em gameplay with the same 2,000 chip stacks.

Those who make it through the qualifiers will also receive accommodations from a 4-star hotel all throughout the Everest Volvo weekend.

For those not fluent in the German language, fear not. While the event may indeed be geared toward our Bavarian brothers, there is no official country restriction. Players from across the globe are welcome to compete, just so long as they bring their own pair of mittens!

These no-buy-in contests have become staple offerings at most online poker sites. Players could, with a large amount of practice, probably pay many of their monthly bills simply by winning freerolls at Poker Stars or Full Tilt. There’s a lot of money out there to be had, if you can figure out how to get at it.

Toward that end, I’ve decided to discuss some ways in which freeroll tournaments present a challenge to your regular strategy. Because of the tournament’s free nature, many individuals will alter their style completely. This is something that an effective player must learn to combat and resist.

In freerolls, there will always be players who are simply there to gamble. Don’t be surprised if you see a lot of all-in bets with an unsuited ace and low kicker. This holds especially true in the low-end freerolls. Whatever you do, don’t lower your standards of play just because everyone around you is. King-deuce and Jack-seven are still bad hands, even in a no-buy-in tournament. Maintain a cool head, tighten up your game, and strike when you have a real shot at winning.

Don’t play like a fool just because there’s none of your own money at stake. Often times, I see players make reckless, inexplicable calls when playing in freerolls. This is good for me, because the field thins out more quickly as a consequence. But if you’re in it to win, be sure to stick to your guns. Play smart, sound mechanical poker, and you should be able to reach the money.

On a different note, however, freerolls can also offer you a chance to practice some more advanced strategy. It gives students of the game an excellent opportunity to mix in a few creative plays they’ve been dying to try out. As always, be aware of your opponents’ tendencies before you try anything too funky. But don’t be afraid to polish some of the new tools in your arsenal.

Knowing what you’re playing for is a key ingredient in choosing the proper freeroll. Consider carefully just how much your time is worth. Will the thought of wining a $10 first prize be enough to hold your attention through an entire four hour tournament? If not, then you’re in the wrong place. You’ll probably make it halfway through, and then grow tired of the game. Sloppy play will follow, and soon you’ll be busted out with nothing to show for your wasted time.

Make sure that the prize is something you’re willing to wait on. Look especially for money added tournaments and guaranteed prize events. A $10 first prize may not hold your interest, but a $200 one certainly could.

In closing, it is possible to build a bankroll on nothing but freeroll tournaments. It’ll take a lot of work, but you’ll be a better player for it. Poker Stars and Full Tilt alone hand out thousands of dollars in free prizes every day. What have you got to lose by checking it out?

Gowen’s reply to the complaint issued by Tiltware’s attorneys was late, as well.

Other factors in the judge’s decision included the lack of any written documentation which would prove the plaintiff’s accusations against Full Tilt. The contract, Gowen claims, was given on a verbal basis. Judge Jones points out in his verdict, however, that any general partnership offer would have required that Gowen also be responsible for 1% of Full Tilt’s losses before the company became profitable. And because no partnerships claims were filed with the Nevada Secretary of State (as per state law), he sees that “it is not plausible that a partnership, limited or general, was offered.”

A little history: Upon being released from her contract in late 2008, Clonie Gowen filed suit against nearly everyone affiliated with her former employer. Players such as Erick Lindgren, Jennifer Harman, and Phil Ivey made the list, along with Full Tilt founders Howard Lederer and Chris Ferguson. Her complaint also included the company itself, along with Tiltware Llc and Pocket Kings TLD. Gowen claimed that she was promised a 1% stake in the company in exchange for her work as a Full Tilt representative.

According to several estimates, such a deal would have netted her somewhere in the neighborhood of $40 million.

After failing in her first two attempts, Gowen was given a third and final chance to amend her argument. Full Tilt then managed to complicate matters by bringing a suit of their own against Gowen.

Those hoping to catch a glimpse at the inner workings of the world’s second largest poker magnate will be disappointed. The judge’s verdict ensures that, at least for now, the gremlins of Full Tilt’s finances may labor on in darkness. Had Gowen been successful, the company would have been forced to open its books to the US court system.

With the Judge’s final verdict now on file, the poker community can turn the page on what has been one of its uglier litigation cases in recent memory.
