With FTOPS XIV winding down, 9,832 players took part in $120+$9 No Limit Hold ‘Em Knockout event. Hosted by the 2009 World Series of Poker sixth-place finisher, Steven Begleiter, the tournament had a prize pool of $983,200 with its first-place finisher winning over $100,000.

The final table was as follows:

Seat 1 – Dinhjo (6,220,000)

Seat 2 – BikStik8585 (7,276,474)

Seat 3 – SNG Ninja (8,201,863)

Seat 4 – Al-Extrem1 (1,458,822)

Seat 5 – boltsva (1,401,536)

Seat 6 – Alcatrez27278 (5,388,636)

Seat 7 – little chief17 (12,996,445)

Seat 8 – bethwolf22 (2,402,830)

Seat 9 – cristinalindley (3,813,394)

With the blinds at 100,000/200,000 and an ante of 25,000, Al-Extrem1 only had six big blinds left. Facing a raise from little chief17, Al-Extrem1 reraised all-in with pocket aces. Little chief17 made the call with KdJs. The QdQcJc gave little chief17’s a pair of jacks with the Jh coming on a later street to complete little chief17’s suckout and knock Al-Extrem1 out of the tournament in ninth place.

Boltsva was next to be knocked out by little chief17. From early position, little chief17 raised and was called by boltsva in the big blind. The flop came out a 9h4s2c. Boltsva check-raised all-in and little chief17 called. Boltsva held 6h6s but little chief was ahead with Ac9s for top pair, top kicker. Neither the turn nor the river helped boltsva and he was gone in eighth place. In the very next hand, BikStik8585’s Ad7s was beaten by Alcatraz2278’s 5h5s on a 7d5c3dJc3c board and was sent home in seventh place.

Tournament play continued quite normally until it was down to the final three. SNG Ninja, cristinalindley, and little chief17 made a deal that granted a little more than $100,000 to little chief17 and cristinalindley with a bit over $95,000 going to SNG Ninja. Soon after, the chips went in preflop in a hand between SNG Ninja and little chief17. SNG Ninja’s Kh8s was drawing thin against little chief17’s pocket queens. The board was no help to SNG Ninja and he was knocked out in third place.

Heads-up play began with little chief17 having more than a 2-1 chip advantage over cristinalindley. This lead steadily increased to 5-1 as play continued. With 7 million chips left, cristinalindley called little chief17’s reraise all-in with KsJs. Unfortunately, little chief17 had her dominated with AsJc. The board ran out Ts8d2dTc5c and little chief17’s ace kicker won him a gold jersey and a prize of $125,959.96 Cristinalindley won $106,460.01 for her impressive effort.

The results were as follows:

1st – little chief17 - $125.959.96

2nd – cristinalindley - $106,460.01

3rd – SNG Ninja - $95,968.83

4th – Dinjho - $52,306.24

5th – Alcatraz27278 - $38,344.80

6th – bethwolf22 - $27,529.60

7th – BikStik8585 - $19,664.00

8th – boltsva - $14,059.76

9th – Al-Extrem1 - $9,940.15

The story of this year’s World Series of Poker belongs to the 46-year old Darvin Moon. A logger from the small town of Oakland, Maryland, he has become the everyman’s poker icon similar to Chris Moneymaker in 2003. However, in many ways, Darvin Moon is different.

Moon learned to play poker with his grandfather with whom he played seven-card stud. However, it was not until three years ago that he learned the game of Texas Hold ‘Em. He began to play poker more often to raise money for local fire stations and other charities.

After winning a $130 qualifier in his neighboring state of West Virginia, Darvin faced a difficult decision. “The economy is bad and the logging business is terrible. I thought I would go out and get my $10,000, instead of playing,” describes Moon. He rode his first airplane to visit Las Vegas for the first time in his life. After visiting the Rio’s Amazon Room and witnessing the allure of the World Series of Poker, Moon signed up for the tournament. Moon’s wife and brother both supported his decision to enter the tournament. His brother’s response to Moon’s dilemma was, “You’re a fool. Play. We don’t need that $10,000 in the business.”

His improbable eight day run of cards sent him to the final table. “That is the way my whole tournament went. All eight days, no matter what I did, it worked out,” said Moon of his tournament heater. After those eight days, Moon made the final table and was guaranteed at least $1.26 million. As humble as he always is, he stated, “I never imagined I’d have to go back.”

The cards continued to hit Moon as he won second place in 2009’s World Series of Poker along with $5.1 million. Asked what he will do with his money, he promises his life would not change: “I’ve got to be back to work Friday. I’ve got a piece of timber I’ve got to buy.”

Moon is ready to see his life go back to normal. He surprised the poker world when he proclaimed he would not be signing an endorsement deal with any online poker room. Moon explained, “They want you to sign a contract where, they say, they own you for a year…There is not enough money in the world for someone to tell me what to do.”

Darvin Moon’s humility and to keep at his old lifestyle has won the poker world’s affection. He will be back to work on Friday and playing in “Greg’s biweekly tournament down at the Elks, with Joey and Kevin and Mama Marley and them.” The entry fee? $30.

Turbo tourneys are always action-packed with many preflop shoves and chip leads changing regularly. FTOPS XIV Event #15 was no exception. It was a $200+$16 buy-in tournament that ran on a turbo schedule. With more than 2,800 players, the prize pool ran up to $564,800. The tournament went from beginning to crowning its winner in just three hours and 25 minutes.

The final table was seated as follows:

Seat 1 – overbe777 (301,265)

Seat 2 – brin1285 (1,186,754)

Seat 3 – DE KID (322,678)

Seat 4 – skinjiimi (457,592)

Seat 5 – bobboufl11 (947,955)

Seat 6 – FresnoDull (1,443,115)

Seat 7 – charder30fanobv (117,380)

Seat 8 – Big Bear Hills (111,106)

Seat 9 – fan4mizzou (751,155)

With the blinds at 20,000/40,000, the largest stack at the table had only 23 big blinds. This provided enthralling final table play with the preflop shoves coming repeatedly and little postflop action to be seen.

Overbe777 was the first to go when he was busted out holding KcQc and ran into bobboufl11’s AsKs. A three-way pot saw DE KID’s AhQc go against Big Bear Hills’ 4h6h against fan4mizzou’s 4h6d. The best hand held and DE KID tripled up while Big Bears Hills was sent to the rail in eighth place. FresnoDull would fall victim to fan4mizzou after his Jd7s was unable to best fan4mizzou’s AcTc. FresnoDull left in seventh place. DE KID would be the next to go (in sixth place) when his Kh8h lost to bobboufl11’s Ac8s.

Brin1285 hit a patch of bad luck when his aces were cracked by fan4mizzou’s Qh9d. In the subsequent hand, his Kc3d ran into fan4mizzou’s pocket queens and he was sent to the rail in fifth place. Fan4mizzou was out in fourth place after his Kh5h hit top pair on the flop to have skinjiimi’s Ad6d hit an ace on the river. Charder30fanobv would claim his place for heads-up play when his Ac8h beat bobboufl11’s Ks2h for all of his chips. Only 86 hands after beginning the final table, bobboufl11 was out in third place and heads-up play was set to start.

Five hands later, the short-stacked skinjiimi shoved 8c9h to be called by charder30fanobv’s AcJd. In rather anti-climactic fashion, the Qc3s2h7sKc board hit neither player and charder30fanobv won the tournament and the $114,654.40 prize with ace-high.

The tournament results for FTOPS XIV Event #15 are as follows:

1st – charder30fanobv ($114,654.40)

2nd – skinjiimi ($73,988.80)

3rd – bobboufl11 ($54,785.60)

4th – fan4mizzou ($41,230.40)

5th – brin1285 (28,804.80)

6th – DE KID ($19,203.20)

7th – FresnoDull ($14,990.40)

8th – Big Bear Hills (9,036.80)

9th – overbe777 (6777.60)

The FTOPS are among us and tournament players are lining up by the thousands to take part in the events. FTOPS XIV Event 8 was no exception. The 6-handed NLHE Knockout event saw 4,639 players put up $240+$16 to register and play for their share of a $927,800 prize pool. Shaun Deeb, Peter Traply, Steve Merrifield, and 489 others won a piece of the huge prize pool.

The final table set-up as follows:

Seat 1 – lolli82 (3,887,530)

Seat 2 – elheroe (4,800,786)

Seat 3 – nirvanakc (5,391,457)

Seat 4 – yeza (2,985,522)

Seat 5 – Egitai (2,661,945)

Seat 6 – LilPokerGirlie (3,467,760)

Nirvanakc continued to stack chips and separate himself from the rest of the field. He built his stack to 8,000,000 and went on to bust LilPokerGirlie with his pocket aces (LilPokerGirlie held pocket eights). LilPokerGirlie hit the rail $27,834 richer with her sixth place finish.

Nirvanakc didn’t stop knocking his opponents out yet. He got his pocket jacks all-in against yeza’s Ac9c. The board ran out Js8h7d4s7c giving nirvanakc a full house and knocking Yeza out in fifth place. His tournament was finished and he took home $40,823.20.

Another knockout attempt was made by nirvanakc when he got his AcTc all-in against elheroe’s pocket fours. This time, however, nirvanakc was unable to best his opponent and score the knockout. Elheroe doubled up to over three million chips.

Shortly after that hand, elheroe would double up again after lolli82 raised from the button and elheroe shoved his chips into the pot from the small blind. The two players were racing with lolli82’s pocket jacks against elheroe’s AhKs. Elheroe flopped his king on the Kd8d6c flop and lolli82 was unable to improve on the turn or river. Lolli82 was knocked out in fourth place and elheroe took in another huge pot. Lolli82 won $55,668 for his efforts.

Elheroe would continue to knock his opponents out when he raised with AhQd from the button and was called by Egitai’s As7h. The AcTd5h flop gave both players a pair of aces, but Elheroe had the better hand with his queen kicker. Egitai checked and elheroe moved all-in. Egitai called and put his four million chips and tournament life at risk. However, neither the 9c turn nor the 5c river improved Egitai’s hand and elheroe won another big pot. Egitai left in third place and raked in $75,337.

Prior to beginning heads-up play, nirvanakc and elherhoe struck up a deal. With less than a million chip differential in their stacks, the remaining pool was chip chopped with only $8,000 set aside to go to the eventual winner. In the pivotal hand of heads-up play, elherhoe raised from the button with KhTc and nirvanakc called from the big blind with Kd5c. The flop came, KcTd6c, hitting both players. Both players hit their king with elheroe also hitting his Tc for two-pair. The flop action ended with elheroe all-in and nirvanakc seeing his fate. The 8d and Th on the turn and river missed nirvanakc and elheroe took the 23 million chip pot.

Nirvanakc was left with less than one big blind. He was knocked out when he went all-in with Qs4h against elheroe’s Js5s. The 9d8h3s flop missed both players but running jacks gave elheroe trips, the FTOPXIV Event 8 Championship, and $143,827,82. Nirvanakc placed second with $141,953.14 to prove it.

Elheroe is a great tournament player on Full Tilt who won his second golden jersey with a win at FTOPS XIV Event 8. As a matter of fact, his last FTOPS win was at the same event during FTOPS VIII. Congratulations to Elheroe!

High stakes poker is heating up with the pots getting bigger and bigger week by week. Three of last week’s huge pots were over $300,000 and the two other pots were not far off by much. Ziigmund, Phil Ivey, Patrik Antonius and Tom “durrrr” Dwan remained constant on the high stakes scene. Pot-limit Omaha at Full Tilt Poker remained the game of choice throughout all of this week’s high stakes action.

In a $500/$1000 PLO heads-up match between Ziigmund and durrrr, Ziigmund was on the button with Jh9h7d5s and raised to $3,000. durrrr three-bet to $9,000 with his AhQh9c7c and Ziigmund called. The 8cTdQc hit both players hard giving durrrr top-pair, top-kicker with a flush and straight draw and giving Ziigmund a queen-high straight. The money was destined to go in on the flop. durrrr check-raised Ziigmund’s $15,000 bet to $63,000. Ziigmund three-bet to put the rest of Dwan’s $105,196 stack all-in. durrrr called and the pot ballooned to $354,392. Neither the 7h nor the 5h on the turn and river helped durrrr and the huge pot was Ziigmund’s to take.

At another table, Phil Ivey and Ziigmund were playing pot-limit Omaha heads-up at a $500/$1000. Phil Ivey raised his As9s9h6d on the button and Ziigmund called with 9c8d7c7d. The 9d4d4h flop came out in Phil Ivey’s favor giving him a full house. Phil Ivey bet $5,000 after Ziigmund’s check. Ziigmund raised to $21,000, Ivey reraised to $53,000, and Ziigmund called. The Qh turn did not hit either player and was checked through. In a last ditch effort to take the pot, Ziigmund shoved his $108,992 stack on the Ac turn but ran into Ivey’s monster. Ivey made the call and shipped the $329,984 pot.

Back at durrrr and Ziigmund’s table, durrrr raised his Ah7hJc3h to $3,000. Ziigmund three-bet to $9,000 with his 9d7d6c4s and durrrr called. The flop hit both players, giving durrrr top-pair, top-kicker with a gutshot straight draw. Ziigmund, on the other hand, had middle pair and a flush draw. Both players checked through and saw the 7c turn. This gave both players two-pair with durrrr having the bigger hand. Ziigmund led out with a pot-sized ($18,000) bet but was raised to $72,000. Ziigmund reraised and put Dwan’s $72,295.25 stack at risk. Dwan called with his two-pair and Ziigmund saw that he was behind to Dwan’s larger two-pair. The Kc on the river did not help Ziigmund and Dwan was awarded the $306,590.50 pot.

At the same table, Ziigmund had the button and raised to $3,000 with AcAdJdTh. durrrr three-bet to $9,000 with AsKsQs5c and was answered by Ziigmund’s $27,000 four-bet. Dwan reraised to $81,000 and Ziigmund got the rest of Dwan’s $65,292.75 into the pot. Both hands were racing with Ziigmund’s pair of aces leading. The 5h7c2d3c2h board totally missed Dwan and Ziigmund won the $292,585.50 without any post-flop play.

Last week’s final monster pot was played between Patrik Antonius and Ziigmund. On the button, Antonius raised the bet to $3,000 with his AdJdTh8h. Ziigmund reraised to $9,000 with his AsAhKc7s, saw Antonius four-bet to $27,000 and raised once more to $81,000. Antonius made the call in position with only $47,497 left behind. The flop came QsQd5d giving Antonius the nut flush draw and Ziigmund two-pair. Ziigmund got the rest of Antonius’ stack into the pot and saw he was ahead. The 9h on the turn missed Antonius but the 7d completed his flush. Antonius stole the $256,994 pot on the river.

Last week’s large pots were huge but very different from the other pots covered in this series. This is because all of this week’s pots were played at Pot-Limit Omaha tables. Every single one of these pots were $200,000 or over with one going over $300,000! Ivey got into it against Ziigmund with Patrik Antonius and Tom Dwan also getting into the Pot-Limit Omaha action. All of this week’s hands were played at Full Tilt Poker.

In last week’s biggest pot, Phil Ivey was heads-up against Ziigmund at Full Tilt’s $500/$1000 table. On the button, Phil Ivey raised to $3000 with AhJd4d2h and was three-bet by Ziigmund’s AcKc8s6s. Phil Ivey called and the flop ran AsJs8c. Ziigmund bet $13,000, Ivey raised to $48,000, and Ziigmund shoved his $144,495 stack in. Ivey called with his top two-pair and saw he was against Ziigmund’s lower two-pair with a flush draw. Luckily for Ivey, the 3h and Td on the turn and river did not improve Ziigmund’s hand and Ivey took in the massive $306,990 pot.

At another Pot-Limit Omaha table, durrrr and Patrik Antonius were playing heads-up with the blinds at $200/$400. On the button, Antonius raised to $1,200 with his Jd9dTc8s and durrrr three-bet the action to $3,600 with his Ks9s7d6d. However, Antonius kept the initiative by four-betting durrr rto $10,800; durrrr called. durrrr donked a $13,200 bet into the $21,600 pot but Antonius raised to $43,600 with his straight. durrrr shoved all-in to $136,071.50 with his two-pair, second nut flush draw, and gutshot straight draw and Antonius called with his made nine-high straight. The turn 3d was of no help to durrrr but Antonius lost the huge $293,743 when the 6c came out on the river and gave durrrr a full house.

Back at our first table, Phil Ivey raised to $3,000 from the button with 7c7dTd2c and Ziigmund three-bet to $9,000 with 8d7s5c4h. Phil Ivey made the call in position and saw the 2h7h4s flop. Ziigmund bet $16,000 into the $18,000 pot with his two-pair & gutshot straight draw and Ivey raised to $66,000 with his set of sevens. Ziigmund went all-in for $115,994 and Ivey called. The Jd and 5s did not help Ziigmund and Ivey took the $249,988 pot.

That same night, durrrr chose to take a shot at Phil Ivey in Pot-Limit Omaha. On a $500/$1000 table, durrrr raised to $3,000 on the button with Qc8c5h3s and Phil Ivey three-bet to $9,000 with AsKdQd7h. durrrr made the call and the flop came 3dKh7d to which Ivey proceeded to bet $14,000. durrrr raised to $60,000 and Ivey raised to put the rest of durrrr’s $36,499.50 stack all-in. durrrr called and showed Ivey his bottom two-pair. However, Ivey’s top two-pair were leading. durrrr picked up additional outs with the 5s turn. The 7s gave both players sevens full but Ivey won with his sevens full of kings. The $210,999 pot was Ivey’s.

This week’s final hand involved Ivey and Ziigmund (yet again!). Again, Ivey was on the button and raised to $3,000 with AdQc2d2h. Ziigmund three-bet to $9,000 with AcKcKhQh and Ivey called. The flop was 6c5dQd. Ivey bet $14,000 with his pair of queens and nut flush draw. Ziigmund called with his pair of kings and went on to the Th turn. Ziigmund took the lead with a $46,000 bet and Phil Ivey put him all-in for $31,000 more. Ziigmund called and Ivey saw that his pair of queens behind Ziigmund’s kings. Ivey did not get his diamond on the river and Ziigmund took the $200,000 pot.

Last week, High Stakes poker saw the comeback of player Brian Hastings. He put in a huge session last week to win $267,450. Other players that did well include kingsofcards and THENUTHUNTER. Most of this week’s high stakes action was on Full Tilt Poker on tables as low as $200/$400 and as high as $500/$1000.

In last week’s largest pot, Brian Hastings’ AsQd was heads-up against Isildur1’s Kh9c on a $200/$400 table. Isildur1 was on the button and raised to $1,200. Hastings three-bet to make it $4,000 and Isildur1 called. The flop came JdTsTh, a paired board giving both players gutshot straight draws with Hastings drawing to the higher straight. Hastings bet $4,800 and Isildur1 raised it to $12,600. Hastings called and saw the 2h come out on the turn. Hastings check-called Isildur1’s $20,600 bet with nothing but a gutshot straight draw. The river was an Ad to which Hastings checked again and faced a $53,245.50 decision after Isildur1 shoved into the $74,400 pot. Hastings called the bet with his pair of aces and saw he caught Isildur1’s bluff; the $180,891 pot was Hastings’.

At a $500/$1,000 table, kingsofcards and Patrik Antonius were playing heads-up. On the button, kingsofcards raised to $3,000 with AcJc and Antonius made the call with Th9s. The flop was 5c3c9d giving kingsofcards a flush draw and Antonius a pair of nines. Antonius check-raised kingsofcards’ $4,000 bet to $16,000 and kingsofcards semi-bluffed the rest of his $74,390 stack all-in with his overcards and flush draw. Antonius made the call but saw his chances at winning the $162,780 pot dwindle as a Jd came on the turn. All was lost for Antonius on the 6c river and kingsofcards took the pot.

Only an hour after the biggest pot of the week, Brian Hastings was able to take in another huge pot at the same table against Isildur1. The action was raised to $1,800 by Hastings on the button with his pocket deuces. Isildur1 three-bet his KhQs to $6,600 and Hastings called in position. The flop was perfect for Hastings: 2hQhTd. He hit his set and his opponent had top pair with a king kicker. Isildur1 bet $7,800 into the $13,200 pot and Hastings smooth called. The turn was a 5h and Isildur1 bet $17,600. Hastings shoved his $62,994 stack all-in and Isildur1 called with his pair of queens. Isildur1 was disappointed to see the river was not a heart but instead a Ks to give him two-pair. Unfortuantely, the two-pair was not strong enough to beat Hastings’ set and Hastings took the $154,788 pot.

Brian Hastings was not the only one to capitalize on Isildur1’s play. Later the same night as Hastings’ match against Isildur1, THENUTHUNTER sat with Isildur1 and also played heads-up. On the button, Isildur1 raised to $1,800 with Ks3s and THENUTHUNTER three-bet to $6,600. Isildur1 called and saw the 6s7hTs flop give him a flush draw. THENUTHUNTER bet $10,200 into the $13,200 pot and Isildur1 raised to $43,800. THENUTHUNTER shoved all-in to $67,590.75 with his overpair and Isildur1 made the call. Neither the Qc on the turn nor the Jh on the river improved Isildur1 and he lost another big pot, this time to THENUTHUNTER.

Only fifteen minutes later, Isildur1 was involved in another huge pot. Patrik Antonius was on the button at a $500/$1,000 table and raised to $3,000 with his KhJh. Isildur1 three-bet to $10,000 with 6c3c and Antonius called. The flop was 7h4h6s giving Antonius a flush draw & overcards and Isildur1 a pair of sixes. Isildur1 bet $14,000 and Antonius raised enough to put Isildur1’s $63,499 stack all-in. Isildur1 made the call with his middle pair and Antonius knew he needed a heart, a king, or a jack to win. None of Antonius’ fifteen outs came and Isildur1 won the $146,998 after the Ad and Ac on the turn and river cementer his win.
