Vanessa Selbst, like most professional poker players these days, began learning the game online. She plays under the screen name “fslexcduck” but has not garnered much success there. Most of her success comes from live tournament play. After a few big wins at major poker events, she was quickly signed to Team PokerStars. Vanessa Selbst has come a long way from her humble beginnings in Brooklyn, New York.

Selbst began playing online poker under the screen name “fslexcduck” on Full Tilt Poker. She did not play much on this screen name. In her time there, she was not a winning player. However, her online sample size is rather small and does not indicate much. She is, in fact, an amazing poker player. The win that shot her to poker fame was her 2010 NAPT $5,000 Main Event win at Mohegan Sun. This win netted her $750,000. After this, PokerStars came knocking on her door and made her a Team PokerStars Pro.

Contrary to popular belief, this was not Selbst’s first huge win in live tournament play. In fact, she has had a lot success at the World Series of Poker. Altogether, she has seven cashes with her first being at the 2006 WSOP $2,000 NLHE event. She took seventh place in this event and won $101,285. Two years in a row, she made it to the semi-finals of a Heads-up NLHE World Championship. The first year was the 2007 WSOP with a $5,000 buy-in while the next was the 2008 WSOP with a $10,000 buy-in. In 2007, she also won her first bracelet for winning the $1,500 Pot-Limit Omaha event. Altogether, her seven WSOP cashes total $605,929 in earnings.

Even with all this poker fame, Vanessa continues to go to school. She graduated from Yale University where she was the head of the Yale Queer-Straight Alliance. She is pursuing a Law Degree at Yale Law School in the civil rights field. Vanessa certainly has a bright future ahead of her. She will certainly be one of poker’s future stars!
