Thomas Bihl
Thomas Bihl, also known as "Buzzer", is one of Germany's most successful poker exports. Arriving courtesy of a sporting family, Bihl graduated from sportsbetting to online poker with consummate ease. Quickly becoming one of the most successful online players of recent years, as well as a force to be reckoned with in live tournaments.
Bihl discovered poker in the summer of 2004 and, after grafting away for copious hours online, eschewed a lucrative career as a stockbroker to enter the rough and tumble world of professional poker.
2005 saw his first real emergence on the live circuit, cashing in five separate tournaments across Europe, including two final tables. His first visit to North American shores, and his high stakes tournament debut, was at the WSOP Circuit Championships in New Orleans. True to form he went deep in the event, eventually finishing in 23rd place for a cool $14,000.
In 2006 he went from strength to strength, making a further 6 final tables on the European scene. Attempting to continue his WSOP success he ventured to Las Vegas to compete in the highlight of the poker calender. Although he did succeed in cashing, 95th in the No Limit Hold 'em shootout, he could not top his achievements from the previous year.
The best, however, was yet to come, and it would be another in WSOP event in which it would manifest. In 2007 Bihl travelled to London to compete in the inaugural WSOP Europe, the first event of which being the £2,500 ($5,000) H.O.R.S.E event - the style of tournament considered by the pro's to be the best measure of who are the greatest tournament players in the world. The final table certainly bore out that kind of thinking: Containing a combined total of 9 WSOP bracelets, including this likes of Chris "Jesus" Ferguson, Jennifer Harman and two members of London's own Hendon Mob. Given the quality of the field is even more impressive that Bihl took first place for $140k, and with it the first World Series bracelet to be won on non-US soil.
Despite his tournament success, like many players, Bihl still primarily plies his trade in the online poker rooms. Concentrating mainly on 6-handed Sit 'n Go's he has enjoyed amazing success. In an interview with pokerverdict.com he recalls that:
"I have only had one losing month online since June 2004. The reason is I will simply play so many games (usually 1,000 SNGs per month) that the good and bad runs even out within the span of a month."
He also estimated that, at the start of 2007, he had won over $250,000 in the last two years. What are the qualities that make him such a formidable poker force? Bihl has the answers:
"Hard-working, relentless, reliable, ambitious, professional."
