Phil Gordon hosted the first season of the Celebrity Poker Showdown. Phil is one of the best poker teachers in the world, the chat below shows that he takes pride in his quest to teach.

Intro by Eric Sprague:
We are very thankful that Phil took some time to join us in our chat room. Here is the transcript for those of you who missed it.

10:25:42 pm : Setzy : hi!
10:25:43 pm : w32e1 : Yayy
10:25:45 pm : Ravageur : Welcome!
10:25:51 pm : Triptan3s : i see
10:25:59 pm : Phil Gordon : sorry I'm late...
10:26:01 pm : Eric : Welcome Phil!
10:26:04 pm : w32e1 : Sign my breast !
10:26:07 pm : Eric : We have some prepared questions first
10:26:09 pm : w32e1 : just kidding..
10:26:10 pm : Setzy : lol
10:26:18 pm : Phil Gordon : U____Phil Gordon_____U
10:26:20 pm : Setzy : ok i'm shuttin up
10:26:22 pm : Eric : Your https://www.clientcart.com/secure/_Las%20Vegas%20Academy.html Las Vegas Academy is coming up on June 24th. What made you and Andy decide to do this? Why is the price so low compared to other seminars?
10:26:25 pm : Ravageur : lol
10:26:43 pm : Phil Gordon : well, I think the other camps are rip offs, esp the WPT Bootcamp
10:26:58 pm : Eric : In the Final Table Poker DVD you mention that Chris Ferguson has given you good advice. One example is when he told you to study the impact of big events on the dynamics of a final table. From talking poker with other pros do you have more tips that can be relayed to online players?
10:27:06 pm : Phil Gordon : I love teaching, and I am ready to bring the Best Poker and blackjack lessons possible to people at an affordable price
10:27:19 pm : Phil Gordon : 1) Play Aggressively
10:27:31 pm : Phil Gordon : 2) Temper the aggression with PATIENCE (online players aren't very good at that)
10:27:46 pm : Phil Gordon : 3) Observe your opponents at all times
10:27:53 pm : Phil Gordon : thats enough for now
10:27:57 pm : Eric : In the Final Table Poker DVD you noticed that the loose online player bet forcefully when he was on tilt and you correctly realized that it was the weak hand-act strong tell. What are some of the other common tells that you see in players?
10:28:27 pm : Phil Gordon : my favorite is when they look down at their chip stack after the flop -- 99/100 that means they are planning on betting
10:28:44 pm : Eric : Having Cisco buy your company for almost 100 million dollars is something that does not happen to the average poker player. How did this factor into your bankroll management and playing style early on?
10:29:04 pm : Phil Gordon : 1) I didn't make anywhere near the amount of money people think I made
10:29:18 pm : Phil Gordon : 2) didn't affect it much, just gave me the confidence to pursue my passion
10:29:35 pm : Eric : I don't want to rush you with these questions, I'll wait until you say "Next" from now on
10:29:43 pm : Phil Gordon : next
10:29:47 pm : Genitruc : hehe
10:29:54 pm : Eric : In the 2002 WPT Aruba Tournament they talked about how sometimes you like to sit backwards in the chair when playing cards. Is this strictly because of your height or are there other reasons?
10:30:04 pm : Triptan3s : ctrl+v and ctrl+ c in the house
10:30:15 pm : Phil Gordon : height, and being close to the table keeps me more focused.
10:30:20 pm : Phil Gordon : -->next
10:30:26 pm : Eric : Your 2003 sports road trip sounds like it was a blast(Super Bowl, Stanley Cup finals, Final Four). What was your favorite event?
10:30:45 pm : Phil Gordon : www.ultimatesportsadventure.com is the website... the final 4, by far.
10:31:33 pm : spoonitnow : I created room "#flopturnriver"
10:31:53 pm : Genitruc : ??? are there more prepared questions?
10:31:54 pm : Phil Gordon : next
10:32:00 pm : Eric : from koolmoe:
Can you share any notable stories about one or more of the celebrities on Celebrity Poker Showdown? In particular, were you surprised by anyone's play, or did you notice any particular player using their personality to great advantage?
10:32:20 pm : Phil Gordon : Mena Suvari surprised me -- very good, thoughtful player....
10:32:43 pm : Phil Gordon : And, Martin Sheen surprised me... the notre game football team was playing during his episode and he purposefully busted out to watch
10:32:47 pm : Ravageur : No Dennis Rodman but....
10:32:51 pm : Phil Gordon : bad move, in my opinoin
10:32:59 pm : Phil Gordon : Dennis is a freak
10:33:01 pm : Ravageur : heh
10:33:01 pm : Phil Gordon : no doubt
10:34:11 pm : Genitruc : uhhh... "next"?
10:34:16 pm : Eric : from michael1123:
How frustrating is it as a poker player and author to watch famous donkeys play on CPS, while having to give actual poker commentary on their clueless play, to viewers that are mostly just as clueless about poker nonetheless?
10:34:17 pm : Phil Gordon : next
10:34:34 pm : Phil Gordon : Ask Phil Hellmuth, its his problem now.
10:34:41 pm : Eric : lol
10:34:42 pm : Genitruc : hahahaha
10:34:42 pm : Setzy : *grin*

10:34:52 pm : Eric : from michael1123:
Does the poker community look down on / mock you because of the show that you host?
10:35:01 pm : Setzy : hosted..
10:35:04 pm : Phil Gordon : incidently, ratings for the new Phil Hellmuth show? 0.2. Our last season we averaged 0.6
10:35:16 pm : w32e1 : boom headshot

10:35:27 pm : Genitruc : pwned
10:35:27 pm : Phil Gordon : yes, for the most part, Eric. But they also give me props for bringing the game to people who won't watch ESPN or WPT
10:35:28 pm : Setzy : nh phil :D
10:35:37 pm : Eric : from Pingviini:
Do you feel that it is easier or harder for you to concentrate on winning in poker when money isn't really an issue but you just want to win for the win?
10:36:12 pm : Phil Gordon : money is an issue, but I want to win, no doubt. I don't do anything "for money" I do it because I'm passionate about it.
10:36:30 pm : Phil Gordon : good recipe for life success above, btw.
10:36:48 pm : Xianti : Very true.
10:37:36 pm : Ravageur : Not sure if we can ask questions yet...but it's related. WHen you pick a game or table to play at, do you pick a table that you can take advantage of? Or one that's a challenge to you...
10:37:51 pm : w32e1 : good question :)
10:37:56 pm : Ravageur : As in are you looking for fish or to try your hand with the best of the best...
10:38:08 pm : Phil Gordon : being a professional poker player means that its your job to surround yourself with the most mentally challenged people you can find.
10:38:10 pm : Ravageur : Online or other...
10:38:16 pm : w32e1 : HAHAHA
10:38:17 pm : Genitruc : HAHAHAHAHAHAHAH

10:38:30 pm : Eric : lol
10:38:32 pm : Ravageur : k sry
10:38:38 pm : Xianti : Eric will let you know when the floor is open.
10:38:39 pm : Eric : np
10:38:40 pm : Xianti : Thanks.
10:38:42 pm : Eric : dwarfman:
Clearly money isn't so much of a factor for you in poker, so you don't have to worry so much about this when playing. Do you feel that even the top pros can tend to play differently (poker-wise) solely because of their bankroll and how they are managing it?
10:38:50 pm : Eric : from dwarfman i mean
10:38:56 pm : Phil Gordon : yes, clearly they do
10:39:03 pm : DaNutsInYoEye : as phil recently on pokeredge, poker is the only profession where it pays to surround yourself with idiots
10:39:22 pm : Phil Gordon : but I don't worry about their bankroll, in all honesty. I have no idea who is swimming in money and who is broke. couldn't care less.
10:40:16 pm : Eric : from midas06:
Do you see yourself as a better teacher than poker player now?
10:40:23 pm : Phil Gordon : defintiely.
10:40:25 pm : Phil Gordon : no doubt.
10:40:39 pm : Phil Gordon : I will never be the Best Poker player in the world, but I strive to be the Best Poker teacher.
10:40:51 pm : Phil Gordon : and I work very hard at it
10:41:00 pm : Genitruc : nice
10:41:05 pm : Setzy : that's cool man
10:41:17 pm : Eric : that's really cool
10:41:21 pm : Eric : from gabe:
What is your favorite poker game?
10:41:27 pm : Zodiac Killer : Phil Gordon is my friend on myspace, like omg!
10:41:29 pm : Phil Gordon : 3 books, DVD, materials at ExpertInsight.com, Pokre Edge, ESPN.com weekly column... time consuming but I love teaching

10:41:49 pm : Eric : from gabe:
Do you play cash games much or just tournaments?

10:42:06 pm : Phil Gordon : but play both
10:42:16 pm : Eric : from gabe:
What is the best advice for an aspiring professional poker player?
10:42:26 pm : Phil Gordon : don't give up the day job
10:42:31 pm : Eric : lol
10:42:37 pm : w32e1 : rofl
10:42:48 pm : Triptan3s : NOT SURROUND URSLEF WITH THE SPECIAL ED?
10:42:54 pm : Genitruc : haha
10:43:45 pm : Eric : that's it for the prepared questions excpet for the one that DaNutsInYoEye had. Since DaNutsInYoEye is here he can just ask it
10:43:56 pm : DaNutsInYoEye : Phil, you're so successful and handsome it makes me want to vomit. Quite frankly I'd rather hear more about the chick you recently got engaged to. Would you be willing to tell us anything more about her other than that she's a lawyer from Vancouver, like her name maybe?
10:43:56 pm : Phil Gordon : bring it
10:44:14 pm : Genitruc : wow scooptime
10:44:16 pm : Phil Gordon : Barb is her name. We've been dating for four years.
10:44:18 pm : Ravageur : Oh Canadian, she must be a keeper :p
10:44:19 pm : Eric : Segment I is over, please keep the open questions limited to batches of 3.
10:44:29 pm : Phil Gordon : She's brilliant -- much smarter than me -- and I'm thrilled.
10:44:38 pm : w32e1 : good luck with that
10:44:41 pm : Genitruc : congrats then phil cool
10:44:43 pm : DaNutsInYoEye : must be a genius if smarter than you

10:44:46 pm : w32e1 : I get to ask a question now? :x
10:44:58 pm : DaNutsInYoEye : I recently found out about your Bad Beat on Cancer fundraising effort when watching WSOP re-runs and think it is a wonderful endeavor. I read that for a $500 donation you'd give a 30 minute lesson by phone. Basing my opinion of your advice solely on watching the horrific play on CSP, would you be willing to just sing show tunes instead?
10:44:59 pm : Xianti : Open Q&A: Open to all. Watch for batches of 3 questions. Once Phil is satisfied that he's answered all he wants, he will say "Next." Then, the next batch of 3 questions.
10:45:00 pm : Triptan3s : Phil, you versus Erik Seidel in a game of basketballl to 11, twos and ones, who si going to win?
10:45:02 pm : Phil Gordon : also a damned good poker player, volleyball, scrabble, and just about everthing else you can think of.
10:45:04 pm : Genitruc : when there 's chance i ve got a br management question too...
10:45:23 pm : Phil Gordon : For the $500 smackers, I'll talk dirty to you if you want.
10:45:32 pm : w32e1 : lolll
10:45:33 pm : DaNutsInYoEye : haha, nice
10:45:36 pm : Genitruc : lmao
10:45:40 pm : w32e1 : Hi Phil, I'm from the new generation of young "online pros" - and of course in a few years I'll be hitting the big events such as the WSOP week and I'm attenting atleast one EPT even this year, if you could give any tips for the transition from online to live play what would it be, and what common mistakes do you observe in the young generation that compete in these big events.
10:46:11 pm : w32e1 : Exluding getting a hot canadian girl that can stake me.
10:46:16 pm : Genitruc : lol
10:46:16 pm : Phil Gordon : you guys try to bluff too much -- what you have to realize is that in a field of donkeys, they just keep calling.
10:46:36 pm : Phil Gordon : keep your bluffs to a min, and make all the money you can when you have the best hand
10:47:01 pm : Phil Gordon : especially after the fop
10:47:04 pm : Phil Gordon : flop

10:47:13 pm : Genitruc : i d go next?
10:47:17 pm : w32e1 : Ok so focussing on extracting more, less on bluffing. Cool - another thing, maybe general question - more money to be made online or next?
10:47:20 pm : Triptan3s : heellooooooo
10:47:20 pm : Phil Gordon : bring it Geni
10:47:20 pm : w32e1 : I'm done after this
10:47:24 pm : Zodiac Killer : From Fleece: <Fleece> are u REALLY phil gordon????
10:47:32 pm : Genitruc : k cool
10:47:48 pm : w32e1 : or live*
10:47:48 pm : Genitruc : simple question : what do you suggest as buy in br for multi table tourneys?
10:47:55 pm : Phil Gordon : online is great, but you're not going to win 10 million online. the big tournaments are the way to build a name and a big score.
10:47:56 pm : Setzy : triptan did ask a b'ball question up there that wasn't answered :p
10:47:59 pm : Genitruc : i ve heard as high as 100 by seidel... and as low as like 35...
10:48:14 pm : Phil Gordon : 4-5 at least... unless you're Daniel N. -- then you need at least 20.

10:48:22 pm : Genitruc : LMAO
10:48:31 pm : Genitruc : WORDS OF WISDOM

10:48:49 pm : w32e1 : loll
10:48:54 pm : Phil Gordon : ah, Geni, I misunderstood your questions.... sorry... yes, 100 big bets.
10:49:00 pm : Genitruc : thx
10:49:07 pm : Phil Gordon : I thought you were talking about rebuy tournaments
10:49:25 pm : Genitruc : so my 6k is no good for the stars million this weekend. oh well
10:49:34 pm : Phil Gordon : nope
10:49:36 pm : Genitruc : patience:huh:
10:49:36 pm : Hartlin : May I ask a question about rebuy BRs?
10:49:42 pm : Genitruc : :)
10:49:56 pm : Phil Gordon : I've got 15 minutes left guys
10:50:08 pm : Triptan3s : ask HArt
10:50:11 pm : Hartlin : How many buyins do you suggest one should have to play a rebuy if they only play them on a one time per week basis?
10:50:28 pm : Phil Gordon : gotta watch the new episode of Celebrity Poker Showdown tonight...
10:50:36 pm : Genitruc : LMAO

10:50:48 pm : Triptan3s :
10:50:50 pm : Phil Gordon : you need about 4-5 rebuys for a rebuy tourney
10:51:02 pm : w32e1 : or 125 if your Daniel N
10:51:03 pm : Phil Gordon : fun with emoticons....
10:51:08 pm : Hartlin : how many buyins should I have in my BR then, to play them?
10:51:22 pm : Phil Gordon : how good a player are you?
10:51:25 pm : Hartlin : should I treat it as a 5x the buyin MTT?
10:51:30 pm : Phil Gordon : yes
10:51:32 pm : DaNutsInYoEye : he's a donk
10:51:38 pm : w32e1 : lol
10:51:38 pm : WildBobAA : lol
10:51:39 pm : Triptan3s : Phil, what kind of music do you enjoy listening to?

10:52:17 pm : Genitruc : what was the most surprising thing you discovered while researching your latest book playing at the lower stakes online Phil? (if noone else has dibs...)
10:52:30 pm : Genitruc : if u were surprised at all...
10:52:32 pm : WildBobAA : phil, when is Full Tilt going to add rebuy tournaments?
10:52:38 pm : Phil Gordon : the new book isn't about low stakes -- a few hands are, but not all
10:52:42 pm : Phil Gordon : no idea Bob
10:52:45 pm : Genitruc : oh sry
10:52:49 pm : w32e1 : Phil, you seem to have a sense of humour so I thought I'd throw you a curveball, maybe a little less poker related - what do you think of Daniel N. 's haircut - and you and Phil Hellmuth fight on celebrity boxing who wins?
10:53:00 pm : Eric : lol
10:53:04 pm : Genitruc : haha
10:53:07 pm : DaNutsInYoEye : we want r/a's phil

10:53:33 pm : Phil Gordon : I kick Hellmuths ass... no question about that... haven't seen DN's haircut -- he's so short I barely notice him walking by most of the time

10:53:44 pm : w32e1 : HAHAHAAH
10:53:46 pm : w32e1 : AHAHAHHA

10:54:41 pm : w32e1 : nh
10:55:00 pm : Setzy : ooh i got one; which poker 'pro' do you enjoy playing with the most, and why?
10:55:00 pm : Hartlin : How do you suggest one makes the transition from a $6 buyin (very low, I know) to a $16 buyin SNG (almost triple). I'm moving from 90+ buyins at the $6 level to only 30 at the $16 level. What is the best approach to do so without having "scared money" and dropping back down due to a possible downswing?
10:55:24 pm : Phil Gordon : enjoy playing with Chris Ferguson -- I learn something every time he's at the table.
10:55:43 pm : Phil Gordon : you have plenty of money, Hartlin, if you're a winning player
10:55:47 pm : Setzy : that $1 to $10,000 thing he did online was cool
10:55:52 pm : Phil Gordon : 30 sit and go buy-ins is enough I think
