Peter Eastgate
Peter Eastgate, born in Odense, Denmark on the 13th of December 1985, is a Danish Poker Player and the youngest ever champion of the World Series of Poker Main Event.
Peter's story begins just like that of many. A bright kid, he went to the Sct. Knuds Gymnasium where he got introduced to the game of poker by his friends. After this, he would attend the Arhus University to study a good bit of finance, but seeing how much money he was making with poker, he decided to drop out of it and play some poker full time in 2006.
He got very proficient at online play very quickly. He was playing poker online mainly short-handed and heads-up games, with full-ring considered "too boring" by him.
But he also tried his hand at tournament play. In 2007, he had his first cash coming in 9th in the PaddyPowerPoker Irish Open. He also scored in the EPT Scandinavian Open in 32nd place. But his most memorable run came in the World Series of Poker 2008 Main Event.
The 2008 WSOP Main Event started innocently enough, with all the participants giving it their all and giving in to their hopes and dreams of winning the whole thing. People showed up donning clown suits, mascaras, knight suits, three piece suits, hoodies and whatever else they wanted to don at the event, so everything was looking perfectly normal. Eastgate joined as well, having won his seat via Ladbrokes Poker. At some point later, he chose to represent PokerStars instead.
As the event went on, the true contenders emerged from the pack and the posers were sent home packing. Down to about two tables, Eastgate picked up AA and Dennis Phillips raised. Eastgate elected to call, rather than the obvious raise, and Tiffany "Hot Chips" Michelle also tagged along behind him. The flop came AT9r. Tiffany checked, Dennis Phillips bet a sizeable amount and Peter Eastgate called. When Tiffany got her turn, she announced all-in for another sizeable bet 4 times what Dennis Phillips just bet. Phillips laid it down, and Eastgate called with Set of Aces vs. Tiffany Michelle's AJ. This hand was pivotal in what would be history in the making, because it gave Eastgate a healthy chip stack and an actual shot at winning the mother lode.
On the final table, Eastgate showed tremendous poker prowess by outmaneuvering most of his opponents until finding himself vs. another young gun, Russia's Ivan Demidov. Ivan also had a great run, but he fell short vs. the young Dane, who is often compared to the Great Dane himself, Gus Hansen. Both feature the same ultra aggressive style, and capability of being paid off when they get hands because of their perceived recklessness.
In an unusual twist, for the first time ever in WSOP history the final table did not play right after all the previous tables have played, but instead it played out in November , with the finalists being referred to as the November Nine. The final two would be played the next day, and Only Eastgate and Demidov survived to the very last day of play. The final final table did not last very long, because Eastgate ran very hot. Eastgate held Ad5s vs. Demidov's 2h4h on a 2dKs3h4c. On a 7s river, Demidov shoved and Eastgate called him instantly, leaving Eastgate crowned as the youngest ever World Series of Poker Main Event Champion.
After his record-breaking victory in the 2008 WSOP, Eastgate proved he was no fluke by cashing in the European Poker Tour (EPT) PokerStars Caribbean Adventure (PCA) Main Event and also winning the $5,000 buy-in side event for $343,000. Because of his large WSOP win, Eastgate is currently in the top 5 of the all-time money list despite being only 23.
Peter Eastgate is still young and does not have a lot of accolades on his resume list. But his short list is very impressive, and will only grow even more impressive with time.
