With no current full-time job and after making such a huge score last month I have had a lot of time to sit and think about poker and I have been mulling over lots of ideas about articles that I would like to write about. I am constantly thinking about my game and I am always trying to improve and for me writing about my game helps me to see some things that I might have been missing. I knew for a long time that I wanted to post a hand history from one of my tourney wins to try and help explain some concepts about the mid to end game of tourneys since one of the most common posts in the MTT forum goes something like this: “I know how to play the beginning stages of a tourney and regularly get in the money, but I just can’t seem to finish them off. What do I need to do in the mid to late stages of a tourney to get to the final table?” I am hoping that this article will help answer that question. The hard part for me was figuring out how to make going through this hand history as reader friendly as possible. In the end, I have decided to simply make this first article a straightforward analysis.

What follows is an analysis of a tourney on FullTilt which I took down a couple of months ago. It was one of the standard $26 tourneys that start with a single stack of 1500 chips. The field had 858 players and first place paid just under $5k.

To make the analysis as thorough as possible yet not make you want to stab your eyes out, I put the tourney through JeffreyGB’s handy dandy tournament trimmer. This tool condenses the hands that you are not involved in and just shows the long version of the hands that you actually do play. It is a great way to post hand histories in the forums and is also a great tool to simply analyze your own play to determine if you are making any glaring mistakes. However, there are still over 140 hands that I was involved in during this tourney so getting through this entire thing will take some time and effort. Thankfully there are quite a few hands which were inconsequential and therefore need no commentary. I will comment on hands that I think are important or that help explain some of my playing concepts in italics after the hand.

A couple of points to keep in mind before I begin my analysis are: 1) I very likely have a different style than you might have and some of the plays that I do you may not be comfortable doing – so I am not advocating that my style is the only way to win, it is just a style that I have developed and am comfortable with and has worked for me. As a MTT player you need to develop your own style and keep adjusting it until it works for you; and 2) I am also not trying to say that just because I won this tourney that I played it perfect – I make mistakes just like everyone else. If you go through the entire hand history and see hands that you think I misplayed, feel free to start a thread and criticize my play. I am always looking to better my game and constructive criticism is one of the best ways for anyone to improve. So with that in mind here is my analysis of a $26 freezeout tourney on FullTilt.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW BEFORE YOU EVEN SIGN UP FOR A TOURNEY

The first thing to understand when starting a tourney is the structure. On Tilt, the blind levels gradually go up every ten minutes (whereas on Stars the blinds increase more rapidly but they do so slower at every fifteen minutes). What is important to realize here is that the last level of this first hour (level 6) has blinds at 50/100, which means that if you don’t accumulate chips you will only have about ten times the BB at the end of this hour and will be in push/fold mode. I’ve pasted the following to show you what the blinds will be at the start of each hour of play just to give an idea – in general you want to stay above 15x the BB so that you can actually play some poker and not be forced into just playing push/fold.

As another generality, you also need to double up about 3 times in a normal payout structure to have an average stack by the time you make the money – so for a tourney with a starting stack of 1500, you’ll need to have about 12,000 chips to have an average stack by the time you hit the money. This does not mean that you HAVE to get that amount or you will have no chance of making the final table, it’s just something to keep in mind. Last point, is that in most single stack tourneys, you usually hit the money sometime between the 3rd and 4th hours of play.

Ok – so I’ve signed up for a $26 single stack tourney on Tilt and I am looking to accumulate chips. The question is how to do it? In the early stages, I basically am just looking for hands where I can double up against the sea of donkeys who are playing almost any hand and will refuse to fold to preflop raises. Most of these hands just play themselves. The above hand was a common example.

In this hand I simply called preflop for set value. When it went check, check, min-bet in front of me I raised simply because the bet felt weak and my 2 pair was very possibly the best hand at the moment. So I raised simply to try and take the hand down there and to see where I was at. When one of the original checkers ended up smooth-calling it became pretty clear to me that he had a big hand and when he pushed the river it became even clearer. So I cut my losses and folded. No big deal.

This was another hand that simply played itself. The table was limp happy and I had a hand that plays well multiway so I limped UTG. My opp than raised but he really didn’t raise enough to make me fold – by the time it came back to me it was only 160 into a pot of 440 so I was getting almost 3 to 1 and I trust my post-flop game enough that I was willing to make this call for less than 10% of my stack. Post-flop the hand played itself.

This was another BB special and the flop came out pretty nice for me with the nut flush draw and two overs (and even runner runner str8 draws). My options here were to either go for the check raise, or simply to lead it out and try and take it down. I opted for the latter since a 7 high board is unlikely to have hit anyone. I bet the pot and when I got called, I simply went into check and re-evaluate mode. When none of my outs hit, it was just move on to the next hand time.

My previous push in the BB with AJs set this hand up for me. I knew geno would call with any two, and I basically wanted to get the antes and his stack by pushing here – it was an added bonus when another deepish stacked guy called with TKo and I held. This is finally a hand where the stacks are deep enough that you can play some poker. My opp bet less than 3x the BB preflop and he had a stack that was big enough that he didn’t want to lose it. The flop is actually very scary for many of the hands that are in his preflop raising range (e.g. AQ, TT-QQ, etc.). So I simply made a play – if he repopped, I fold. But the beauty of this hand is that he will fold well over 50% of the time.

Late in tourneys it becomes important to protect your blinds, but also to protect your button. This was a hand where I felt I had the stack and the hand to protect my button preflop. Early in a tourney I would never advocate calling off over 10% of your stack with a hand like this, but with a read late in a tourney I like my play. Whether I have 220k or 190k at this table given the chip stacks doesn’t matter that much, so I can use my positional advantage and the fact that I play well postflop to make this play. Postflop, this hand just played itself.
