Mike Matusow
There may be no player in the world better at throwing off other players games than Mike Matusow. “The Mouth” may come off annoying and arrogant to some people, but his resume speaks for itself. Although Mike is now living well, life has been one huge roller coaster.
Right after he graduated he considered becoming a mechanic. Instead he became obsessed with video poker. He played so much in fact that he ended up with a repetitive strain injury in his arms and shoulders. He began to love poker and ended up becoming a dealer to study the game. He wasn’t winning at first, which posed an addiction problem early on.
But Matusow believed he could win. With better bankroll management, Matusow worked his way up to the big games of Omaha 8 or better, of which he is now considered one of the best in the world. A few years later Matusow astonishingly won in 81 out of his first 82 Texas Hold’em sessions totaling in $250,000. Confident, Matusow entered his first WSOP playing Omaha 8/Better, and finished second to Scotty Nyguen in 1997. Two years later, Mike won his first WSOP bracelet playing the $3,500 buy-in No-Limit Hold 'em.
It would be nice to finish with “And now he has made millions and is living richly,” but unfortunately Matusow’s struggles weren’t ending, they were just beginning. In 2000, Matusow was having too good of a time as a professional poker player; partying and doing drugs until all hours. In 2004, he hit an all time low when he was sentenced to 6 months in jail on drug charges.
When Matusow got out, with a new perspective on living and a vow to play the best poker of his life, his poker career started up again right where it left off. Only after a few months out of jail Matusow won the WSOP Tournament of Champions for $1 million dollars.
You can find Matusow now in the High Stakes games on Full Tilt Poker, as well as on T.V. shows such as Poker After Dark and High Stakes Poker.
