Jon Turner
The coppertop pro known variously as PearlJammed, PearlJammer and Jon Turner, is one of the breakout stars of the new internet generation. He has crafted a reputation as a formidable tournament player both live and online. This combination of success has lead to a lucrative sponsorship with Full Tilt Poker. The ‘home of the pros’ was more than happy to snap up one of the game’s rising stars.
Jon first came to the attention of the poker world in 2005, attending his debut World Series of Poker. He put in a very impressive performance, picking up a $20,000 score for his 18th placed finish in a $3k No Limit Hold‘em event. Turner has since gone on to record a number of further WSOP cashes, although a bracelet still eludes him. 2009 proved to be one of his most successful years on poker’s grandest stage, as he picked up a couple of very strong cashes. He finished 5th in both an Omaha & 7-Card Stud Hi/Lo ($45,237) tournament and a Mixed Event ($49,568).
Turner began his career during the poker boom. Like many, he was entranced by the travails of Chris Moneymaker- the 2003 WSOP amateur champion who shook the world by winning the multi-million dollar Main Event title from a $40 satellite. Although Jon mostly is known for his online play, he cut his teeth in the live arena. He became a regular winner at cash games and tournaments in the Raleigh area of North Carolina. Having completed a Computer Science degree at North Carolina State University, he quit his job in retail and embarked upon a full time poker career.
Like so many of poker’s new guard, he began to grind a living on various online sites. His familiar Pearl Jam inspired nickname can be found at almost every major site, almost always in the money. It’s no surprise that he has become a feared opponent online. In his short career he has recorded 21 separate tournament wins on Full Tilt Poker alone. Recent successes include winning the $1K Monday ($44,000), Sunday Night H.O.R.S.E., and five $150 + $13 events.
Jon began his career at the lowest stakes and has slowly built his way up. Throughout his short career he has competed in and won both cash games and S&Gs. However, it is multi-table tournaments in which PearlJammed has really excelled himself. He demonstrated his growing ability in 2009, with unquestionably the biggest cash of his career. In the PokerStars Spring Championship of Online Poker he bested thousands of players to finish 3rd in the Main Event, booking him a huge $527,100 win.
This copious talent has brought praise from all corners of the poker media and prompted PocketFives to label him "one of the best Tight Aggressive tournament players in the world."
