Jeff Shulman
Jeff Shulman made headlines when it was known that he earned himself a coveted seat on the 2009 WSOP November Nine. He is, after all, the editor in chief of Card Player magazine; the son of Barry Shulman who earlier took down the 2009 World Series of Poker Europe Main Event by defeating none other than Daniel Negreanu himself heads-up; the lone 2009 November Niner who has already been to the promised land, having made the very same final table in 2000; and he is also the guy who claimed if he would win the 2009 WSOP Main Event bracelet he would dispose of it in a comical way. Way to make headlines and get spotlights on you, but Shulman seemed to know how to handle the heat.
Jeff Shulman proved that those who write about poker occasionally also know a thing or two about the game. Born in Seattle, Washington, and being an alum of the University of Washington, Shulman demonstrated his prowess for the game way before it became super popular, by finishing in 7th place at the 2000 WSOP Main Event for a $146,700 prize. He was eliminated by being on the losing end of two big pots. Who won those pots? None other than Chris “Jesus” Ferguson, who also managed to take down that event.
Shulman also cashed numerous times in WSOP and WPT events. In the Ultimate Poker Challenge’s first season, he won a tournament and also made the final table of that season’s grand final, which James Van Alstyne took down. Prior to his placement as a November Niner, his life tournament winnings would total at around $2,900,000.
Shulman has also indicated a disdain for Harrah’s Casino, the people behind the World Series of Poker. This disdain stems from disappointment in how the World Series of Poker is run, and not because the WSOP’s partnership with rival Bluff Magazine instead of his own Card Player magazine. “It used to be run by people who loved and really cared about poker, and had the players in mind, first and foremost." It has been widely reported that Shulman claims that if he were to win this year's WSOP Main Event, that he would throw the bracelet away.
Shulman made the November Nine with a chip stack that would be good enough to start out 4th in chips. Shulman reportedly hired acclaimed player Phil Hellmuth as his poker coach. During the event however, things did not fare as well as expected, and Shulman was eliminated in 5th place. His monster stack got crippled when he lost an all-in pre-flop of pocket Jacks vs. Joe Cada’s pocket threes. Shortstacked, he was forced to make a move, and eventually busted out when his pocket sevens lost a race to Antoine Saout’s A9o. For his placement in this event Shulman took home a healthy $1,953,395 in prize money, bringing the total amount of money he has won in live tournaments to a hair under $4,000,000.
Jeff Shulman can now add “WSOP 2009 Main Event: 5th” to his long list of accolades. This would sure make his dad, the Champ of the 2009 WSOPE happy. But a question remains; had Jeff taken this thing down (aside from being the first father and son team to win both the WSOP and the WSOPE, not to mention the same year) would he have really disposed of the bracelet? I know I wouldn’t be able to.
