Jason Mercier
Jason Mercier is one of the premier tournament poker players currently. He has had several big wins and strong cash finishes in live and online poker tournaments alike. But aside from that, he is also a very good cash game player. Jason Mercier undoubtedly is emerging as one of the hottest young stars in recent times.
Mercier was studying to be a Math teacher before he made it big in the poker world. Like so many others, it was Chris Moneymaker’s big Main Event win in 2003 (when he defeated Sam Farha heads up and won $2,500,000) that inspired Mercier to become good at poker. Soon after this happening, he began to play poker at home games with his friends.
When Mercier arrived at college, he got his first glimpse of online poker. He then started to study the intricacies of the game, and it wasn’t long before he started making improvement by leagues and bounds. He started to get consistently good results in tournaments, and also started to get very good results in his cash game play. It did not take long before he grinded his way to Supernova Elite, becoming only the 16th player ever to achieve the distinction.
2008 was the year of Mercier’s coming out party at the live tournament scene. To put it in perspective, you have to realize that there are scores of players out there who make steady, consistent cashes in tournaments, but keep waiting in vain for that big score. Some, numbering in the thousands, never make it. But Mercier took down the first ever live tourney he played in. The first one. Ever. He came out of nowhere and beat the whole field of hopefuls about 700 something strong to take down the PokerStars.com European Poker Tour San Remo event in April 2008, earning him $1,372,893 for his efforts that day.
Six months later he almost repeated that amazing feat, when he came in 6th place in the EPT Barcelona 2008 event, and that finish was good for $324,946. A few days later, he made another final table, this time finishing in 8th place in the World Series of Poker Europe £5,000 Pot Limit Omaha event in London, and a month later he then proceeded to win the EPT London High Roller event, cashing in $944,847. Mercier was, in the immortal words of Hevad Khan, a “BUUUUUULLLLLLLLLLDOOOOOOOOOOOZEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEERRRRRRR”!
In 2009, his amazing run continues. In the L.A. Poker Classic event in February he made two final tables, and that included a first place finish in the Pot Limit Omaha Event. Next, at the Wynn Classic, Mercier once again decimated the field coming in first and taking home another $81,480. And then, we had the World Series of Poker in Las Vegas, in which Mercier once again made a killer showing and won his first bracelet, this time in the $1,500 Pot Limit Omaha event. That win awarded him $237,462 in prize money.
Aside from poker, Mercier enjoys playing basketball and going to the beach. An avid competitor, he also enjoys watching sports either on TV or live.
Mercier has proven time and time again that he is the real deal. He has all the accolades one would want: Supernova Elite, EPT win, WSOP bracelet, tons of cashes and a killer beanie hat. Mercier can be found playing online at PokerStars using the handle “JasonMercier”.
