Jamie Gold
Jamie Gold, born August 25 1969 in Kansas City, Missouri, was the 2006 WSOP Main Event Champion. He is also an American TV Producer and a talent agent.
Gold began playing poker while he was very young. His mother Jane was a keen poker player, and his grandfather was a champion gin rummy player. But he also started in the entertainment business at a very tender age. At 16 he was an intern at the J. Michael Bloom & Associates Talent Agency.
Before he was 21, he became a full-on talent agent, which represents actors for a living. Gold's clients have included late-night show funnyman Jimmy Fallon and Asian blockbuster bombshell Lucy Liu.
A popular misconception is that HBO's award winning show Entourage main character Ari Gold is based on Jamie. The thing is, this is not exactly true as it was actually based on agent Ari Emanuel who represents Mark Wahlberg, the show's executive producer. There is more to this story, but it is beyond the scope of this bio, so short answer is no(t necessarily).
As a talent agent, he has also worked with Johnny Chan and Chris Moneymaker on a TV show. It was then that Johnny Chan offered to mentor him in the ways of poker, and he became a very good tournament player. Gold began to play in a ton of tournaments in 2005. In April, he won his first major tournament at the Bicycle Casino, earning him $54,225 for his first place finish.
But his life changed because of the 2006 WSOP Main Event. Gold amassed a massive chiplead since day 4 of the event, and continued to keep this chiplead throughout the whole event. It seemed like nothing he could do was wrong, routinely out-flopping and out-turning opposition, timely bluffs, in short, a lecture on how to play tournament poker. Gold was a master, and tourney poker his chosen canvas of expression.
Gold would also employ heavy use of 'table talk" during this WSOP run, usually goading other players into doing exactly what he wanted them to do. But it was also a source of criticism, as he would some of the time tell the other players his exact holding during a hand, which was in contradiction with WSOP rules. He was never penalized during his '06 run for this though.
He was also seen eating blueberries, which he claimed were "brain food". Johnnie Chan would also make frequent drop-by's to his mentee.
Gold later made history by being the first player to eclipse $10,000,000 in winnings from tournament poker after his Qs9c connected top pair on Qc 8h 5h board vs. that year's runner-up Paul Wasicka's Th Ts that did not improve. Gold took home $12,000,000 for his first place finish and the bracelet, and his name would forever be cemented in history as winner of the biggest live poker tournament ever. He dedicated his win to his father, who was sick with Lou Gehrig's disease and could not attend. Unfortunately, his father died a a few months after the tournament.
After his WSOP win, Gold has appeared on various television shows such as GSN's High Stakes Poker, in which he was involved in a $750,000 pot with the Flying Fin Patrick Antonius. He has also appeared on NBC's Poker After Dark. He has also been very active in a wide variety of cases, such as Ante Up For Africa, Andy Roddick's charity poker tournament, 2008 Hedge Fund Charity Poker, and more.
As a person he is loved by many, as a poker player he is hated by some, but Jamie Gold’s prowess for tournament poker is undeniable.
