Ivan Demidov
Ivan Demidov, born 1981 in Moscow, Russia, is a Russian self-described semi-professional poker player. Demidov is best known for having made the final table of both the World Series of Poker and the World Series of Poker Europe in the same year.
Demidov started playing poker online while in college studying mathematics. He attended the Moscow State University. After he graduated, he started playing the highest cash games he could find in Moscow.
It was in one of these games in which he met a regular who saw the promise in him, and who offered to stake Demidov to play in a few WSOP Events. Soft-spoken Demidov accepted, and let his poker prowess do the talking for him. Demidov would go on to go deep in the $1,000+R NLHE event #44 at the 2008 WSOP, finishing a strong 11th for about $39K. Demidov would then play the 2008 WSOP Main Event, and demonstrated such dominance throughout play, that he earned himself a spot in the November Nine. For the first time in WSOP History, the WSOP Main Event final table would get postponed for about 4 months in order to hype it up and get marketing to do its job.
Demidov, in the meantime, would not rest on his laurels simply because he was a member of the November Nine. He would go on to partake in the World Series of Poker Europe Main event also, and in this super prestigious event he would also make a final table. In fact, his performance was so impressive, that he netted a 3rd place finish worth £ 334,850. Demidov also inscribed his name in the record books in the process, because he was the first ever person to have final tabled both WSOP Main Events in the same year.
Eventually, the time for the November Nine to get their play on would get near. Demidov then proved that his 3rd place finish at the WSOPE main event was not simply a matter of running hot at the right times. He would go on to survive the whole Final Table, including outlasting the chipleader at the outset Dennis Phillips, to have to come back for the second day for a heads-up battle vs. Danish youngster Peter Eastgate. Eastgate’s trappy ways did get the best of Demidov though, and he had to settle for a non-too-shabby 2nd place finish worth $5,809,595.
Demidov is widely regarded as Mother Russia’s Chris Moneymaker. His impressive WSOP performance has inspired many in Russia to play some poker, and has single-handedly causes the Russian poker boom. Alex Kravchenko’s strong play during the previous year at the 2007 WSOP Main Event was also a great catalyst for this.
Despite all of his newly found cash, Demidov has remained a down-to-earth person. He has stated that he only plans to use a little cash to buy a house in his natal Moscow and dedicate some more time to his likes which would include scuba diving and white water rafting. Quite the extreme sport enthusiast! Demidov is also a member of the prestigious and feared Team PokerStars, and represents the poker room in many tournaments around the world.
The big win is still elusive for Demidov. While his play has allowed him to reach deep in many prestigious tournaments, as of today he has not been able to seal the deal and take home the title. But as the saying goes, everything comes to him who waits.
