Isildur1
Isildur1 recently signed with PokerStars! You can now play him heads up on the largest site online today. Little is still known about his identity, but PokerStars released the following comment, which is sure to leaves fans anxious; "But with a place on Team PokerStars Pro now confirmed, Isildur1’s real identity is set to be unveiled in the near future."
The one and only Kid Poker had the following to say about the new Team Pro: "It’s not every day that a player like Isildur1 comes along. If you look up the definition of the term ‘phenom’ you'll see a picture of his face! When he is playing, the poker world takes notice. Hate to overuse the poker term ‘sick’ but Isildur’s no-limit Hold'em game is just that – sick! Few people step up to the plate against him, but the ones who have, universally have respect for his raw talent."
It really is true, Isildur1 really is SICK. And it's clear he will be welcomed with open arms. The only mystery that remains is - Just who is Isildur1?!
Very little is known about this mysterious Swedish cash game player. He arrived with a bang and began taking on the very best in the world for the very highest stakes. Isildur1 is the most dynamic thing to happen to high stakes cash game play since Tom Dwan arrived on the scene in 2008. In fact, Dwan has been one of the Swede’s most consistent and generous opponents. Isildur1 has shied away from no one, challenging the likes of Phil Ivey and Patrik Antonius to numerous simultaneous multi-table matchups.
Most assume that the man behind the screenname is a long time grinder, who has recently decided to make the step up to the big leagues. As with most things surrounding Isildur1, whether or not he has secured a big financial backer remains unknown. What is known is that he is highly skilled and seemingly addicted to poker. Since exploding into the big games in October 2009, he has been an almost constant fixture at the tables. He is apparently happy to take on all comers, however skilled or well-know.
Undoubtedly his favourite opponent is Tom Dwan. In just a few short months, Dwan has lost an incredible $5 million to Isildur1. Playing both Pot Limit Omaha and No Limit Hold ‘em, Dwan has been unable to get the better of his mystery opponent. Isildur1 has the kind of loose aggressive play that matches up well with Dwan’s own brand of hyper-aggression and he has triumphed over durrrr almost every time they have met.
Unfortunately for Isildur1, he has donated almost all of those winnings back to the other top pros. Three men in particular have been the key benefactors. Illari “Ziigmund” Sahamies began poorly against Isildur1, but soon began to triumph on his favourite PLO tables. After some observation, it is generally agreed that Isildur1 has an excellent NLHE game, but cannot quite compete at the same standard in PLO. Nevertheless, he has show that he has no fear of facing off against the best at any game. As one of the world’s top PLO players, Ziigmund has used this to his advantage and picked up around $1.8 million from Isildur1.
Any doubts you might have about the power of Isildur1 as a catalyst for high stakes action should be dispelled by his encounters with Patrik Antonius. The Finn is arguably the finest PLO player in the world, but even he began poorly against Isildur1. After a few weeks of consistent losses, Patrik finally turned the corner, just as the amount of money in play began to take a serious spike. The pair have now broken the record for the largest online pot in history a multiple times. Their most recent record breaker totaled out at an unheard of $1.35 million. In total, Patrik is up around $1.7 million.
It should come as no surprise to hear that the only player consistently victorious against Isildur1 is Phil Ivey. Widely recognized as the game’s greatest living player, Ivey is famed for his ability to adapt his style to suit any opponent. He has had particular success against Isildur1, taking him for a total of $3 million so far. Isildur’s bankroll has previously climbed to around $5 million and down to around -$2.5 million. He is still currently in the red, but with millions of dollars on the table every night, these figures could alter rapidly.
Isildur1 has kept his identity shrouded in secrecy, resulting in a fervor of speculation on poker forums. Numerous different players have been suggested, with the most popular candidate being the 20 year old Swedish pro Viktor Blom. Tony G event went so far as to claim that it was definitely Blom behind the screenname. However, Blom publically denied that he was Isildur1, cryptically stating that, “I am not the one you are looking for. Keep searching.” Barry Greenstein also claims to know the identity of the Swede, announcing that all previous guesses were incorrect and the Isildur1 was a young player with a bright future ahead of him. The Robin Hood of Poker also noted that Sweden’s strict gambling tax laws encourage many local players to keep their identities hidden.
Isildur1 certainly shows no signs of going away and, unless the likes of Phil Ivey can completely crush his bankroll, it looks like this cash-game phenom is here to stay.
