Ilari Sahamies
Ilari Sahamies, born in 1983 in Helsinki, Finland, is a Finnish poker professional better known as Ziigmund in the online world. He is generally regarded as one of the best Pot Limit Omaha players online today, and generally has more gamble than the average pro.
Sahamies was always very interested in playing all sorts of games. As a youngster, he would play in a variety of sports, such as basketball, wrestling, and soccer. Sahamies would also play billiards well, having won a few Finish championships in the discipline.
Sahamies’ attention turned to poker when he saw a documentary about it on Finnish TV. He was 15 at the time, and would go on ta participate in home games with a few friends. Among those attending you would also find Patrick Antonius himself, whom Sahamies met in a pool hall.
Ilari started going to the Grand Casino Helsinki about the time he was 18 years old. At first he would lose a ton of money. As the legend goes, he would have to work all sorts of odd jobs in order to feed his poker playing bankroll, because he was a losing player at first. The game of choice at the time was Pot Limit Omaha. But at some point he started to truly get the game, and booked winnings of €70.000 by his second year. At that moment he decided he’d pursue playing poker for a living.
He started playing online, and before soon his online roll ballooned, far too quickly one would say. This had bad implications, because Sahamies would also go broke quite a few times back then. His playing style is very volatile, and very susceptible to large swings of money.
Around 2006, Sahamies would gain fame by playing on Full Tilt Poker under the account “Ziigmund”. He instantly became a feared name in the highest stakes of the game played on the site, and everybody wanted to know who this Ziigmund was. Needless to say, Ziigmund was there to stay. He can still be found today playing all kinds of poker on Full Tilt at stakes up to $500/$1000. His best game seems to be PLO, in which he absolutely crushes the opposition. His A-game PLO prowess might be equaled or perhaps surpassed only by David Benyamine.
Sahamies table antics make him a fan favorite. He would constantly dish out chat box abuse on his opponents. If you have never played vs. him before, you might not see it coming and go un super-ultra monkey tilt, and it is then that Sahamies makes short work of you. He is truly an expert at the Psychological game.
Sahamies has not expressed interest to live abroad like his fellow countryman Patrick Antonius did. Other than poker, he still practices a ton of sports. He is a regular swimmer and jogger. He maintains himself in top condition, a mandatory requirement to play good poker.
He has also appeared on a variety of televised cash games, most recently on GSN’s High Stakes Poker Season 5. Sahamies has also appeared on NBC’s Poker After Dark the cash game. At the moment, Ilari Sahamies is not yet a very very big name like Patrik Antonius or Phil Ivey, but he is getting there. One reckless pot at the time.
