Unlike many other poker rooms, Guru Play was not left to their own devices when it came to designing their poker client. As a member of the Ongame network, in addition to the multiple thousands of users in the network's player base, Guru Play is also entitled to use the Ongame software. This downloadable client and instant play interface is used by all sites on the network, and is generally speaking pretty solid.
Unfortunately for players from inside the United States, you'll have a very tough time getting a look at the software as the Guru Play download doesn't accept US Players and has a number of security measures to prevent you from joining their site. Bizarrely, even though the Ongame client has both a mac and a windows version which are both used by many other skins, Guru Play only has a Windows download available on their site, meaning that Mac users luck out there. It's not the end of the world, however, as the Instant Play in-browser interface offered is compatible with both Mac and Linux, as well as Windows.
The Guru Poker download lobby has two main views. The first is a hyper-simple system where you simple select your game, stakes and the number of players you wish to play with and Guru Play will automatically find you a seat at an appropriate table. When you want more information about tables and more control over where you're sitting, there is a more advanced lobby system which is similar to that found on most poker sites. There are a set of tabs and further filters so that you can display only certain kinds of tables, and from there you can make your selection based on a number of different statistics such as average pot size, number of players to the flop, and so on and so forth.
Of course you'll be spending more time on the tables than you will in the lobby, and Guru Play has really nice tables. 3D avatars, nice animations and clear bet and pot sizes text are all to be found, alongside big and intuitive buttons. As far as options go, you can activate a four-colour deck and all the usual multi-tabling and blind-postiong preferences are at your disposal. As with most recent poker rooms, there's also an instant hand history replayer.
While nothing we haven't seen before, the Guru Play skin of the Ongame software is definitely a solid software package. It's disappointing that they don't seem willing to host the mac version of the client, but that may be set to change in the near future, so keep your eyes out. In the mean time the client is good enough that it will surely keep Windows users happy, and Max and Linux users will just have to settle for the Instant Play feature.
