Gavin Griffin
Gavin Griffin. This is one of those guys who is instantly recognizable at the poker table, most likely by his sometimes bright pink hair and the way he cradles his face into his hand, the same way every time. Griffin has proved to be a force in tournament poker, having won many of the biggest live events that have been offered, and also at one point holding the record of being the youngest to win a WSOP bracelet.
Griffin was born in 1981 in Darien, Illinois. He also had high hopes of playing baseball professionally. He was offered several scholarships, but instead decided to study Speech Pathology in the Texas Christian University in Fort Worth, Texas.
Gavin then discovered poker. He would at first undergo some losing sessions in home games against his college friends. Then he began to study poker, and started crushing the games.
Then, in 2004, an inspired and 22 year old griffin travelled to Vegas to play in the World Series of Poker and won a bracelet in the $3,000 Pot Limit Hold’em event. This was the start of a phenomenal live tourney career, as with his win he became the current record holder of youngest bracelet champion ever, taking away Alan Cunningham’s record. This record has since been broken however.
Since that win, Griffin proved he was no fluke by having strong performances in literally every tournament he’d enter. And fittingly, Griffin has also been making quite an impact in the European Poker Tour. His biggest win yet came in the 2007 EPT Monte Carlo Main Event, which he qualified to play to in a PokerStars satellite. That win’s payday was €1,825,010, and earned Gavin the respect of the global Poker community in the process. He was now officially a force to be reckoned with.
The Monte Carlo main event was also the place where his pink hairdo came in the spotlight. Gavin has been a keen supporter of Breast Cancer charities, since his girlfriend is a survivor of the disease. His girlfriend asked him to walk with her in a 40 mile charity walk, the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer. Gavin excitedly agreed, and also promised he’d wear pink hair for all tournaments until the walk.
But Griffin’s poker prowess did not stop there. In January of 2008, Griffin made the record books once again, this time for being the first winner of the Poker Triple Crown. He did so by beating the field and winning the WPT Borgata Open, and with the win became the first player to win a WSOP bracelet, and EPT event and a WPT event. All in all, Gavin Griffin proved not once, not twice, but three times that he’s an excellent player and a force to be reckoned with. PokerStars, the world’s largest site, recognized this immediately and proceeded to sign him to their team of PokerStars Pro’s to travel the world flying PSs colors.
Gavin has already achieved all there was to achieve, and he is not even 30 years old. What we are witnessing here is history in the making, as Gavin Griffin could go down in history as one of the greatest players the sport of poker has ever seen. No one knows what the future holds, but Griffin’s is very bright indeed.
