FTR to English Dictionary

LeFou was nice enough to start this dictionary thread for folks new to FTR. Click Here to add your thoughts to the topic below:

We often find unusual words, or usual words used in unusual ways, here at FTR and for anyone who's only been around the block like 1 or 2 times here is a guide to the jargon:

(This is FTR-specific. For general poker slang check http://www.gaminggurus.com/slang.shtml)

3gw/so - too complicated to summarize neatly. See below.

asshat -
noun: a person with hisher head up hisher butt
verb: to screw up

Avatard - a poor choice of avatar for the forums.

banning request - accepted

Beautifuk - Something that is so beyond belief its beautiful - useually used in a negative connotation, IE seeing Kings cracked 3 times in 5 minutes.

blind stratle - blind steal. [awesome, zen ... i barely remember ... was that pkrfanatic?">
[Editor's note: he was really trying to say straddle ... probably best not to re-open this wound

Cashouted - To have cashed out.
or
Cashouted: the loud sounds emitted from a poker player after he has made his cashout.

fukk house -- this is just "full house" with one of your fingers on the wrong key. Used only when opponent is holding it. If you're holding it it's just called a boat.

holibobs - holidays, i.e. vacations

The LeFou - Hold'em starting hand Ace-Ten. More specifically Ace of Diamonds Ten of Hearts
I'm honored.

lemon party - the less you know about this, the better for you. A shock site (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shock_sites)

Operation - a goal set by a player; for details see: http://www.flopturnriver.com/phpBB2/viewforum.php?f=25p. Don't start up any more operations unless you really do have an interesting one. They're getting annoying.

pwned - come on, now, you know what this is

Rebuys and strap-ons: (n) - a tourney with re-buys and add-ons that you were not told about in advance.

red cards - one way of using game theory to bluff PF. Raising every time you get red cards can sure throw 'em for a loop. It might also be very stupid; the verdict is still out. A variation of this technique is called "black cards" and you can maybe figure that out yourself.

Rippy - LAgg (That's "loose-aggressive" for those of you who have only been around the block 1/3 of one time)

Ripptyde - 7-4 offsuit; the best hand in poker. (Ed. And blackjack). Also the name of some guy.

Sholy shit! (part of speech): Speechless and shocked awe. Suprise beyond mundane vulgarities.

TABTA - "Tight as a Baby Turtle's Anus"; the proper way to play poker in many situations

Two waffles - rags

(post suggestions below and I'll add 'em)

doesn't that violate FTR's terms of service? where are the banning forms!?!?

Posted by |~|ypermegachi on December 01, 2004 at 17:39

Are u really gonna ban me??.... sucks but if i dserve it then so be it, have to accept it, oh and hyper how much time will i get banned or will it be permanent?

-anto

Posted by elanto on December 01, 2004 at 17:58

It takes 18 years for the banning forms to work its way through the system. There are countless "reviewal nodes" littered across it's path to higher authorities. But once it does make it there and get pre-approved, approved and post-approved, You'll be banned for 11 minutes.

Lesson learned.

I think you improperly defined "Rippy"

Rippy: Seven of Clubs Four of Hearts "Essentially seven - four offsuit."
Used in a sentence:I limped from the button with a rippy, hit the flop and moved in...after I took his stack - I did a little dance and typed you got pwned!

Edit: Oh yea....Elanto - you suck....really...that was quite disturbing. -shudder-

Nice. Abbreviated 3gw/so. I'm thinking this term should only be used as a derogatory term by the person who did not know it was going to be a tourney with rb/ao.

Example: "I was down to the final 4. Man, I was glad I was able to make it that far with only my initial buy in, but unfortunately busted out against the 3 guys with massive strap ons."
[/quote">

"Crap-tacular!" = an expression an FTR'er uses (at least one) when s/he gets rivered by 4 outs or less. Hang out on IRC to see it in use...every night.

Posted by Chicago_Kid on August 09, 2005 at 17:01

I thought it was common knowledge that a blind stratle is when you post a raise UTG in a limit game before the cards are dealt. This gets real fun when you can get the whole table to do this for a few rounds in a row. Dosn't happen too often cuz there's usually one killjoy at the table that lets everyone do it and backs out on his turn.

Posted by KY_Ace on December 18, 2005 at 17:23

LeFou wrote:
We often find unusual words, or usual words used in unusual ways, here at FTR and for anyone who's only been around the block like 1 or 2 times here is a guide to the jargon.

these are definitely not ftr-specific but rather part of the lingo i deploy in my own rl card-related circles. comment as you see fit:

district manager(s): dead money, from d.m. abbreviation. used to communicate w/ knowledgeable others about potential cash-cows sitting @ the table (online or off.)

bangkok: player who (re)defines looseness. so-termed after thailand's tourism industry, as if i needed to explain that.

SEND IT!: exclamation used after winning a large pot against a weak player, usually followed by "AIRMAIL! CERTIFIED! WHAT CAN BROWN DO FOR YOU!" & other such elaborations. extremely useful in tilting players.

the most profitable hand in poker: an advertised 72 bluff, especially after a continuation bet on the flop/turn. so named b/c it tends to severely tilt the opposition.

the x of all x : variable expression, usually expressing loving admiration of a strong hand; e.g., "you picked up kings in the bb? the hand of all hands, the father of all fathers, the lord of all lords!" more specifically, the craft of all craft j9s & the trash of all trash face card/rag.

ninja stars: utterly foldable hands, e.g. face-card/rag. derived from the fashion in which one is willing to throw away said hand(s).

pocket balls: a successful stone-cold bluff; also "the best hand in poker." usually used in (self) congratulating manner, e.g. "my pocket balls beat your trips, man."

solidly boned: two meanings:
1--30/70 domination or worse, OR
2--expression used when somebody smooth-calls on an extremely dangerous board, e.g. jjt w/ two color.

...off the top of my head; there's many others, equally inane...
