Dennis Phillips
The 2008 WSOP Main Event was very special. Not in the same way as the 2006 WSOP Main event was special, because Jamie Gold dominated since like day 3 all the way to the final table to take it down defeating Paul Wasicka heads up. Not like the 2007 WSOP Main Event was special when Jerry Yang deepstack-bluffed Lee Childs at the outset of the Final Table, and went into super agro mode to take it down. But the 2008 WSOP Main Event was very special in its own right, by featuring the first ever November Nine.
The November Nine was the moniker given to the participants who got to the final table. But the dominant chipleader as the November Nine was determined was St Louis’ own Dennis Phillips.
Phillips, a 53-year old accountant for Broadway Trucks, a commercial trucking company in St Louis, Missouri, qualified for the World Series of Poker Main Event through a $200 satellite at Harrah's St. Louis. Who would have thought the joy and riches those $200 would bring him!
Phillips has been playing poker for years before the 2008 WSOP, but he has always done so in a casual way. Phillips’ run at the 2008 WSOP embodies the fact that everybody who has the skills can make it big in poker, and enjoy the riches that come along the way.
Phillips has been a regular at many of Missouri’s card rooms, Dennis started dabbling his feet in tournament poker by the end of 2006. He consistently picked up a few small but consistent tournament cashes along the way. In 2007, he would have a good run at the famous World Series of Poker Circuit event in Tunica, Mississippi. Phillips would then continue to make final tables of two $500 events and won a relatively small amount of money in the process. But the experience proved to be invaluable, for what he was up to next.
In the 2008 World Series of Poker Main Event, Phillips would have an extraordinarily good run and would reach the final table being the big chipleader. The 2008 World Series of Poker Main event was unique from all the others, as the game was put on hold for 117 days, as the final table would play on in November. Dennis was also a fan favorite to take down the whole thing.
But some things are just not meant to be. Phillips came in third during that run, behind Ivan Demidov and eventual winner Peter Eastgate. Phillips still had a truly massive payday, taking home about $4,517,773 for his efforts that night.
Phillips draws many similarities to Chris Moneymaker. Both are accountants. Both were casual players who somehow made huge Main Event cashes. Both are members of Team PokerStars (Phillips username is “D. Phillips”). Moneymaker did have a phenomenal impact to the game in general though, and that is the only thing Phillips has yet to emulate. Phillips did prove to be a great ambassador to the game however, when he donated a portion of his Main Event winnings to charity, and PokerStars then chose to match it as well.
Phillips story is an inspiration to us all, reminding us that it can happen to you too!
