David Williams
David Williams is one of the most feared poker players in the world. He was always a card player though poker was not always his game. Williams got his start in the world of cards, like many other poker players, in the Magic: The Gathering card game. He ventured into the world of poker when he saw an opening and never looked back. He has been successful in both online and live poker with huge wins at both the WSOP and WPT tournaments. David Williams has certainly staked his claim as one of the best in the world.
Williams was born and raised in Arlington, Texas. He excelled in Mathematics & Science and was accepted to many Ivy League universities. He attended Princeton University but left the school shortly after. Williams has had a fascination with games since his early years. He was a well-respected Magic: The Gathering player and had won over $300,000 by 2001. Unfortunately, at the 2001 World Championships of Magic: The Gathering, he was caught with three of four Accumulated Knowledge cards being marked. The judges disqualified Williams from the tournament. He was suspended from any Magic: The Gathering tournaments for a year. It was during this year that he turned to Texas Hold ‘Em.
Williams taught himself how to play No-Limit Texas Hold ‘Em. He claims to have read Sklansky’s books, but mostly taught himself since they were “too basic.” He says he started at the $5/$10 level and moved up from there. He was later mentored by Marcel Luske, an already accomplished poker player. With all these tools, he was ready to make a run at live tournaments. He won a buy-in to the 2004 World Series of Poker through PokerStars. This would prove to be huge as he finished second to Greg Raymer and claimed $3.5 million in prize money. After this huge win, Bodog signed him to become a member of Team Bodog. His good luck continued that year as he finished second at the Borgata Open World Poker Tour worth $573,800. His only WSOP bracelet came in 2006 in the $1,500 Seven-Card Stud event. In 2010, he defeated Eric Baldwin in the $25,000 WPT World Championship and won over $1.5 million. He left Bodog after this win and joined Team PokerStars to become a sponsored pro there. Those that believed Williams was a fluke have been proven wrong again and again.
David Williams has become a household name in poker. Tournament players fear him as he is always a favorite to come out on top. The tough times with his Magic: The Gathering career gave him the opening to learn Texas Hold ‘Em. Williams admits to still playing Magic, though he merely plays it for fun. Poker is his where he makes most of his money with over $7.9 million in tournament winnings. There are few players in the world that have this kind of success in such a short span of time.
