Now that we hear David Benyamine’s name in the same breath as the best poker players in the world, it would be a surprise to some that he also could have been mentioned among some of the best tennis players in the world.

Born on July 5th 1975 in Paris, France, Benyamine pursued a career in tennis, eventually becoming one of the top players in France. However, tennis being such a physically demanding sport, Benyamine was forced to retire because of a back injury. Still with a competitive fire, Benyamine took his talents to the pool table, where he quickly became one of the top players in France once again. Yet, David would give up a career in billiards and instead strive to become the best poker player in the world, a goal that some would say he has already achieved.

Benyamine was doing fairly well at poker early on in his career playing live at the Aviation Club in Paris. But it wasn’t until 2002 when he was given the opportunity to go to Las Vegas on a stake that his big break came. He was left in Vegas with four thousand dollars for a month. He played in the big game as soon as he had the money, and managed to build up his bankroll all the way up to one hundred times that much, four hundred thousand dollars.

Benyamine continued to play cash and earn a rep as the best cash player in the world. In 2006 he was said to be the biggest winner in the “big game.” Although the actual amount he made is only rumored, fellow pros have said that he was at one point winning around twenty million dollars a week.

David is known more for being a top cash game player than a big tournament player. He is a regular at Full Tilt’s sixty thousand dollar buy in No Limit Hold’em cash games as well as a regular at the same stakes of Omaha. But Benyamine isn’t too shabby in tournaments either; He won the WPT Grand Prix De Paris is 2003 for over four hundred thousand dollars, as well as having over a million dollars in live tournament winnings.

A year after his win in Paris, there is a rumor that Benyamine was arrested in the United States. To no fault of his own, he happened to share the name of a suspected terrorist. Because of the suspicious amount of money he was carrying with him, Benyamine’s twenty five thousand dollars was confiscated from him and he was banned from America from a year. This, of course, is only a rumor. Benyamine was recently engaged to fellow pro Erica Schoenberg, and the two seem happy together. You can find David playing under his own name at Full Tilt.
