Chip Jett
When Charles Jett was born on September 22, 1974 in Scottsdale, Arizona, the nurse who helped deliver him suggested the nickname “Chip.” It’s funny how fitting that name is to Jett now, who is a world class professional poker player, where gathering chips are his life.
Jett’s first real job was a lifeguard at a local pool. One day on duty his friend invited Jett to a local Indian casino; that night he went and he lost $40, but seeing how much the dealers were making he decided to enroll in dealer school. Three months later, he was not only dealing at the local casino but teaching at the dealer school he graduated from. For six years he worked at that casino, as a dealer and a proposition player. Learning from his observations, he sharpening his skills at the table and was soon recognized as one of the best poker players in the area. Jett says he learned the most from a top player from Arizona, Jamie Brooks.
“He taught me a lot about poker, and gambling life in general. There was one thing he said that has stuck with me over the years. ‘Chip, have you ever thought about taking up a cheaper hobby than poker? Like yachting?’ I look forward to dishing out that kind of wisdom down the road.”
[Jett, Cardplayer Magazine, Vol. 18, No. 10]
Jett became known as a dangerous player to the poker playing community when in 2001 he final tabled five tournaments, including HORSE, Stud, Stud Hi/Lo, Omaha Hi/Lo, and of course Hold’em, at the L.A. poker classic and won the tournaments best all around player award. Card magazines took notice, and that year he was on the cover of Poker Digest. His success didn’t stop there, he won three tournaments in 2002, two at the World Poker Finals and one at the Grand Slam of Poker tournament. 2003 and 2005 were his best years, where he combined to win over a million dollars. Style wise, Jett is known for his slick appearance and his fearless play. He’s aggressive early and calls down bluffs late. He tries to keep players off balance.
He married another poker player Karina Jett in 2003, a year after they hit it off on their first date in a strip club. They often travel together for Chip to play in tournaments while Karina plays at the cash game tables. In 2005, Karina and Chip made the same final table 2005 London Open, an incredible feat. They both now live in Las Vegas with their two kids, a daughter Athena and a son Apollo.
